Painter/story-teller/poet/musician David Dawson celebrated the launch of his new book of poems and short stories, “A Cowboy's Christmas Morning” last Thursday at Cardinal Cafe.
Friends and fans gathered with coffee and cake for the release and heard a few excerpts from the book, read by Dawson, including the poem, “Road to Chibougamau”.
“The road to Kapuskasing, or the Abitibi Basin, to Pagwa River, Geraldton, or Hearst. Of all the roads you've travelled, some were good, and some were gravel, but the one to old Chibougamau's the worst.”
Dawson's prolificity is almost unbelievable, though he mentions in the introduction that this may be his last book (as he's in his 91st year), “though I know I've made this statement over and over again and each time I've held the completed manuscript in my hand.” As he finished reading, a friend in the audience muttered, “I've met tacks that arent's as sharp as Dave.”
