North Frontenac will be having their Back Roads Studio Tour on September 24-25th. For more details, you can find them at northfrontenacbackroadsstudiotour.com.

Fall is coming! Right now, our backyard migratory birds are preparing to make a long journey south to take residence in areas with more abundant resources.

Fall birding can be an exciting time as you receive new visits from birds passing by! Learn how you can prepare your yard for migration season: https://bit.ly/3u42yks (excerpt from Nature’s Way Bird Products).

Here are a few tips from ThinkInsure for Exterior Fall Home Maintenance:

Clean, Repair, And Secure Eavestroughs And Downspouts: Having your eavestroughs clear of debris is your first line of defence for protecting your roof and your foundation from water and ice damage. Make sure leaves are removed and there is no damage. Ensure your downspout is at least three to four feet away from the foundation of your home.

Repair Exterior Caulking Before Winter: Cracked caulking can cause damage to your windows and sills and can be a source of water getting into your home. Repairing exterior caulking will make your home less drafty and more comfortable while protecting your windows and helping you save on your energy bills.

Make Your Home Energy Efficient: Add insulation, seal furnace ducts, add caulking around windows and doors to keep the heat in and the cold out.

Inspect Your Roof: Your roof is critical to the integrity of your home. Damaged shingles can cause water leakage into the attic or space between the roof and your top floor. If shingles have any curling, buckling, or crackling, they must be replaced. If you notice a roofing issue, have it looked at by a professional.

Prevent Bursting Pipes: Turn off the valves to the exterior hose. Run the water until the pipes are empty and make sure all the water is drained. If it is not, the water can freeze up and damage pipes.

Seal Up Masonry: If you notice any cracks or joints along your driveway, walkways, or steps, they should be repaired or replaced to prevent any further damage.

Call An Arborist: An arborist can help avoid tree catastrophes. They will walk around your property to see if any damaged or dangling limbs might pose a problem in the event of a storm.

Consider A Generator: Plan ahead and purchase a generator that will provide your home electricity if there is a power outage.

Protect the AC Unit: Cover your air conditioner – it can be damaged by debris and falling icicles.

Ompah
by Linda Rush & Marily Seitz

Thanks to Jeff who led the all candidates meeting in Ompah last Wednesday.  Around 70 people were in attendance.  Jeff did a great job ensuring everyone got to speak within a short time frame and he kept it friendly with his wry sense of humour.  Each candidate gave an opening and closing statement and had a chance to answer questions from the audience. Afterwords, folks thought it was good to meet the candidates and especially the new ones, and now folks are more confused than before they attended.

Wifi in the Ompah Community Library is now repaired and back in operation.  If you have the password, you will need to change to the new password.  Just drop into the library on Wednesday or Saturday from 10:00 to 12:00.

Remember the Backroads Studio Tour takes place this weekend (Sept. 24,25) from 10:00am to 4:00pm.  Original handmade arts and crafts will be available at 12 locations throughout North Frontenac.  Locations and information about the artists is available at northfrontenacbackroadsstudio.com or there are postcards with a map in the foyer of the Community Centre.

It has been a full week trying to watch, listen and absorb the death of Queen Elizabeth.  I've been very touched by the number of people who wanted to be near her one last time.  70 years is a long time to reign and now I'm having a hard time switching from Prince Charles to King Charles.

Enjoyed the editorial by Brent Cameron of the Queen in the last edition of the Frontenac News.

The Teal family are saddened to announce the passing of Herbie Teal on Sunday, Sept. 18.  He put up a great fight against cancer but unfortunately it got the best of him.  Thank you to everyone who has reached out to the family - you are all very much appreciated.

Plevna
by Rhonda Watkins

People who attended the NHFSA musical and poetic presentation on Sunday, September 11th in Clar-Mill Hall were thrilled that the event finally happened! Some entertainers were unable to make it due to Covid symptoms, but the White family band played extra times. It was so enjoyable to see brothers Bill and Murray and Bill’s sons, James and Joe share their musical talents. It was obvious that The Land O’Lakes Cloggers were a hit, as the audience tapped and clapped and hollered along with their two very challenging sets! Although Gail Hermer was unable to share her poems from her book; “The Ardoch Country Girl”. Special guest speaker and cousin Angie Cowdy was able to fill in. Edith Beaulieu read some favourite's from Eileen Flieler’s collection and Skip Moyst selected a few from his vast writings that were very appropriate for the occasion. NFHSA appreciated the participation of all these talented entertainers!

A big thank you goes out to the North Frontenac Public Works staff and Brooke Hawley for arranging the completed historical cemetery signs to be installed this fall. You may notice the two signs in Harlowe at the United Church Cemetery and St. Mark’s Anglican and two new signs were also installed at Ardoch’s St. John’s Anglican and in the far end of St. Kilian’s Cemetery. There is also recognition of the Ardoch Algonquin Burial Ground. The research for these signs was completed with the help of community people who shared information, NFHSA researchers, Natalie Reynolds; the designer of the signs and B.M.R. Manufacturing of Campbellford. Thanks to the Township of North Frontenac for the grant that contributed financially to this project.

North Frontenac will be hopping this weekend! It is finally time for the highly anticipated Back Roads Studio Tour! On Saturday and Sunday from 10am-4pm, visitors are invited to travel around to the 12 Amazing Studios and check out their talent and original handmade arts and crafts!! You can visit northfrontenacbackroadstudiotour.com for more information. If you are looking for a map of the studios, I got mine at the Plevna liquor store. You can even pick up a tasty beverage at the same time!

Don't forget St Kilian's Church Chili and Bake Sale this Saturday September 24th from 10-1pm! The grab and go $6 chili and bun combo is a great lunch deal! There will be something there for everyone; including a delicious vegan chili! It is recommended that you arrive early to get the best selection of their large assortment of homemade goodies!

The Sharing Steps Group is starting back up again at the Clar-Mill Hall in Plevna on Monday, October 3rd. Every Monday and Wednesday night at 5:30pm you can move and groove to some good music with some great people! Admission is $4 a visit or $25 a month. For more information, you can contact Donna at 905 925-1552.

There is still time to get your name in the draw for the beautiful Christmas themed quilt "To All a Good Night" to raise money for the Pine Meadow Nursing home!  The draw will be held on Thursday, October 6th. I really don’t know what it will take to smarten up the motorists on the roads. Speeding and passing at unsafe times within village, by buses… Come on, people. I guess best solution is getting plate numbers and calling police? Share the roads and be respectful and responsible.
