Winterizing Home Maintenance Tips: Sheds, Garage, Winter Machinery

Clear Out The Garage: Clearing out your garage will make space for your car and help protect it from winter weather.

Tune-Up Your Snow Blower: There is nothing worse than getting hit with a snowstorm only to find that your snowblower is not working. Take it for a tune-up (or do it yourself) before that first storm. Do not forget to check the fuel level, change the oil, and replace the spark plug if necessary.

Bring Out Salt And Sand For Your Driveway And Walkways: Check your supply and stock up before the first snow. Think about using some green alternatives to protect your garden, grass, driveway, and the environment.

Store Seasonal Tools And Outdoor Furniture: Ensure all seasonal tools, flower containers, and patio seating are cleaned and put away safely in the garage.

Henderson

It was great to have a visit with Ronnie Peterson and to enjoy his freshly extracted honey that was yummy in the tummy!

Henderson United welcomed Licensed Lay Worship Leader (LLWL) Sharon MacDonald leading in the pulpit last Sunday.

My great niece Olivia is at Antigonish Nova Scotia attending school right in the path of the storm! Their residence was evacuated to a nearby church basement at midnight and then they got back in by morning. One of the residences lost their roof in the storm. We are thankful that she is safe.

Henderson United Church is offering a full pork stew supper this Sat. Oct. 1 from 4-6 at the Harlowe Hall and it will be tasty and terrific while helping out the church. Pork stew with vegetables, gravy, coffee, tea, pie and assorted desserts, buns cost $15.00 for adults, $8.00 for ages 6-12, and under 6 free. Won’t it be fun to visit, laugh and eat together? Yahoo!

Want to do a little digging? Archives Lanark wants to help you “dig into your history”, by conducting three separate “dig sessions”, which will focus on educating participants on various genealogical research methods. Sessions will be held once a month from September to November. Each “dig into history session” will be held at our Drummond Centre office at 1920 Drummond Concession 7. Each “dig into history” will begin at 10am and end at noon. After each session, we invite registrants to explore our archive and continue their research, with the assistance of our volunteers, until closing at 3pm. This will be a wonderful opportunity for budding researchers to meet fellow history buffs in a welcoming environment where they can share their knowledge, stories, and experience. The question Archives Lanark the most is…Who was the first owner of my land? It is during any one of these sessions that you will be able to find out. The first “dig into history” will be on September 30th, 2022. We invite those interested to join us to learn about our land registry books and accompanying land instruments (original deeds). A short “primer” on land registry documents will begin our “dig into history session” and will be followed by a question and answer period. After, participants will be invited to explore the archive to see what they can find. The second “dig into history” will be held on October 14th, 2022 and will focus on discovering how important and beneficial our Vital Statistics, Cemetery Records and Census Documents can be to your research. The format will be the same for each “dig session”: a short presentation on the subject, discussion, and then assisted learning and research help in our Archives. The third “dig into history” will be held on November 18, 2022. The discussion will focus on the benefits of using the Women’s Institute Tweedsmuir Histories, as well as our reference library to enhance research goals. The Tweedsmuir books were written by local women from long ago who documented what they knew about local farms and families. i.e. when the well was dug, when the house received electricity, etc. We have books that are filled with local history covering Lanark County businesses, people, places and events. If you would like to attend one or all of these sessions, please register at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. The cost per session is $10.00. Due to space limitations, there will be 5 spots available for each session. Archives Lanark is a registered charity. We look forward to seeing you at Archives!

ABC Hall - The next special event, the Festival of Small Halls concert on October 8, features a dynamic musical duo, Suzie Vinnick with Miss Emily. Mississippi
by Pearl Killingbeck

Belated news over the past 2 or 3 weeks: I haven’t been feeling well for the past few weeks. My body is on strike and it only does things it wants to do. My arm is in so much pain that it is hard to write. My last cortisone shot only lasted 5 weeks.

Two weeks ago, Harriett and I went to Nuala’s (Shamrock Bakery) to have breakfast for the first time this year. The place was buzzing - people coming all the time. No wonder with such beautiful soups, wraps and sandwiches and baked goods she makes. I was so glad to see you, Nuala, and hope to make it back again before you close for the season.

Elaine and I had a wonderful visit two weeks ago Saturday for over two hours. We were putting the world back together and I think we have it fixed. Thank you for the dozen muffins, the biggest muffins I have ever seen and thanks for the visit, and know you do not have to bring me something every time you come.

Denzil popped in for another 5 minute visit. I don’t know who is the best talker – him or I? (I say him). We always have so much to talk about. It turns a boring afternoon into a great one. Thanks for the 2 and ½ hour visits – I really enjoy them. Glad to hear that Evelyn is doing so well. I send her my love.

Congratulations to Bob and Rose Riddell on their newest grandchild – a boy. Parents are Melissa and Andrew.

Some September birthdays: Shirley Mumby; Doug Steele; Dawn Godfrey; my granddaughter Brandy from Shannonville; MY Elvis – Steve Goodberry (thank you Elvis for the long phone call); Mary and Wayne Abrams; Barb Allen and Dave; Brenda Allen and Greg; Trevor Morrow (thanks for cutting my grass all summer); Cynthia Ducharme; Donna Lemke; and a very, very special happy birthday to Adam Lemke who turns 90.

Now we have some anniversaries: my granddaughter Brandy and her husband Tony; Cynthia and Jody Ducharme; Leslie and Gaylen Syme; happy 60th to Marilyn and Carl Tooley; Trevor and Jen Morrow.

Welcome Evelyn Dolan to Sharbot Lake Retirement Home. Evelyn will turn 103 years old on September 12th. We look forward to many more years with you.

So sorry to hear about all your car woes, Wendy. Hope good things turn around for you soon.

Pam and I had a wonderful weekend on September 11th – just a getaway with nothing to do but eat, sleep, laugh and push buttons on a machine. One of us came home richer than the other! (We won’t tell who). We hadn’t been there since March and it was great to get away.

Thank you Richard Lemke for the fish, venison, thick pea meal and best chili I ever had - I will enjoy every mouthful. Thanks so very much.

Thank you Rick for digging up my septic system for pumping next week and thank you Barb for the delicious steak and mushroom dish.

Get well wishes and prayers for Bob DeLisle and Mary Gemmill – they sure need them.

On Thursday, Harriet and I went to Holly’s to get our feet done. Alice drove us – we had a lovely yoghurt muffin made by Holly (yum) and tea. Then we went to Nuala’s for lunch – packed house again (CBC was there interviewing one of candidates for council). I had the best pea meal bacon on a bun that I have ever had and Alice said her bowl of soup was excellent and Harriett enjoyed her Danish pastry.

Thinking of Olive and her girls - Saturday, September 17th – was 35 years since her husband Bill passed away.

On September 10th, my granddaughter Shawna and great grandson Hudson Lemke participated in the North of 7 OCR Challenge in Cloyne. Hudson placed 4th overall in the youth run and 2nd place in the boys’ competition. Shawna participated in the fun. They said it was a great time and can’t wait to do it again next year.

Pearl’s thought: Never deprive a person of hope – it might be all they have.

John Walter blew out the candle at the September Birthday Bash last week.  Fiddle music filled the hall as Victor Maltby played several of his own compositions along with other traditional fiddle tunes.   Toes were tapping and all enjoyed the music, as well as the feast of shared dishes.  The next Birthday Bash Pot Luck is Wednesday, October 19.

On the Back Roads Studio Tour folks came from far and wide (BC, the Netherlands and many places in between) to enjoy the beauty of our countryside and the variety and quality of the products by our local artists and artisans.  Most vendors reported a very successful weekend despite the rain on Sunday.

The first Festival of the Stars was also a great success.  The sky was amazing on Friday night.  Jupiter and Saturn were clear and brilliant when seen on the large telescope.   Saturday afternoon lectures were well attended.  Despite the cloudy skies on Saturday, folks were able to watch a Florida-launched rocket cross the sky as well as see the International Space Station go over.  Pizza by the Red Barn was very welcome by the over 300 people who attended.  Betty Hunter tells me that there will definitely be a 2nd Annual Festival of the Stars next year.
