Did you know...that chipmunks are specially protected wildlife? So are flying squirrels, the big brown, the little brown and hoary bats and their relative, the short-tailed shrew (see recent Nature Reflections by Jean Griffin). And we have several other specially protected species living with us around here. The monarch butterfly and the black swallowtail are among them. So are the water snake and the black rat snake along with the map turtle and the wood turtle and, of course, our five-lined skink. We also are stewards of the blue-spotted salamander (two genetic races), the redback salamander and the grey tree frog. The raven, the kingfisher and the bluejay are specially protected too as are all the hawks and owls and, interestingly, the turkey vulture.
