Mini
ice storm hits areaby
David BrisonAn
ice storm, small only by comparison with the infamous ice storm of
98, hit our readership area Thursday evening, and by Friday, trees
and branches littered yards and roads.Power
was knocked out in many regions.
Bill Rowsomes musings from the shores of the Mazinaw were
interrupted by two power outages totaling 36 hours. He probably was
able to continue musing by candle light, but couldnt put anything
on paper with his computer knocked out.
In
Sharbot Lake, power was out in many areas on Friday from early morning
until 2:00 in the afternoon. Here
at The News, we had to call off our volunteer appreciation luncheon
and reschedule it for December 7.
Several homes escaped serious damage when large limbs narrowly
missed them. One huge limb did come down on the roof of a house across
the road from Sharbot Lake High School, but apparently without causing
extensive damage.By
Saturday morning, it had warmed up enough to melt the ice on the
trees, and everyone breathed a collective sigh of relief.
Up to then, many were trying to figure out how they were going
to heat their house and keep the pipes from freezing if the weather
turned cold. We now are
thinking, Is it ever going to turn cold?
Central
Frontenac Mayor Bill MacDonald noted that the damage to the roads
would have far more extensive if the road allowances had not been
cleared during the 98 ice storm clean up.
One resident said that he had to stop and move four small trees
from the Bell Line Road on the way to work, and that there probably
would have been 15-20 if the brush had not been cleared by crews after
the ice storm.
