LOLCN launches community public Internet Access centresCentres in Northbrook, Snow Road, Sharbot Lake, Tichborne, Godfrey, and Verona officially went online today and joined the virtual global community as Land O Lakes Communications Network (LOLCN) and its partners celebrated the official opening of the 6 new public Internet access centres, thanks to Industry Canadas Community Access Program.

The Community Access Program (CAP) works in partnership with community groups to connect Canadians in rural, remote and urban communities to the Information Highway and to the social and economic benefits it can present.

The Government of Canada proudly partners with local communities, noted Larry McCormick, MP, Hastings-Frontenac-Lennox & Addington. CAP opens both economic and social opportunities for rural communities. It is a pleasure to support Internet access in the Land O Lakes region.

We are very pleased to participate in this innovative partnership, said Jim MacPherson, coordinator of the Land O Lakes Communications Network. These CAP centres will give the people of these communities the tools and skills required to participate in the knowledge-based economy.

People are encouraged to drop by the CAP public Internet access centres to find out how they can benefit from the economic and social opportunities available through the Information Highway. Some special offerings will include: seminars on e-business, workshops on genealogy, job search and digital photography. Web cams and scanners will be available for use at the Northbrook and Sharbot Lake sites.

The LOLCN wasasuccessful applicant in the Fall 2000 competition for funding through the Community Access Program.

The goal of the Community Access Program is to give residents in all parts of Canada affordable access to the Internet. CAP is also an integral part of the federal Youth Employment Strategy, as CAP centres help develop job opportunities for young Canadians aged 15 to 30.
