NF calls in OPP over garbage threat
Some of the comments by Bob Olmstead, a delegate to the January 26 North Frontenac Council meeting, didnt sit right with Councillor Will Cybulski. Olmstead expressed anger over a proposal by the Waste Management Committee to close the Mississippi dump over the winter as a cost savings measure. In his presentation Olmstead presented figures about the cost savings that indicated they would be minor, presented a petition from constituents, and asked seven questions of council.
It was the fifth of these questions, Who is going to pick up the garbage piled on the dump gates or along the road ways or piled on the Mayors or Councillors lawns, submitted in writing and voiced at the meeting by Bob Olmstead, that led Councillor Cybulski to make his own submission to Council in the form of a memo, which he read out at Monday Nights meeting.
Cybulskis memo says, in part, I firmly believe that these were not idle words by Mr. Olmstead, and that he should carry out or cause to be carried out his threats if we do not acquiesce to his wishes. If Council were to let this matter pass by without any action, it would be an invitation to further such intimidation.
In particular, Cybulski did not want to let pass personal threats against councillors, the Mayor, and their family or property.
I ask all of Council to consider that this matter be referred to the proper authorities for investigation and furtherance as necessary.
After Councillor Cybulski read his letter out, a motion was made to forward the matter to the OPP. Mayor Ron Maguire expressed reservations about bringing in the OPP, but all the other members of council said they agreed with the motion, so Maguire voted in favour to make it unanimous.
Mayor Maguire also told Council he should have stopped Mr. Olmstead when he began making threats and had him removed from the council chamber.
Bob Olmstead was a candidate from Council in Ward 3 during last falls election. He finished within 50 votes shy of winning a seat on Council.
The proposal to close two smaller dumps for the winter, the Mississippi and Gull Lake dumps, has not been brought to Council by the Waste Management Committee.
