Sydenhams Two-wheel Champion
by Wilma Kenny
Last weekend, nine year old Danny Smith became Ontarios new BMX racing champion, rookie level, and he wants to say thank you to Sydenham for the support that helped make his win possible.
When Danny watched his first BMX race a little over two years ago, he knew it was the only sport for him. Since then, hes won an impressive array of medals and trophies, culminating in Saturdays triumph.
As all parents know, pursuing a sport to this degree is an expensive proposition. Danny had support from Frontenac Cycle and Loughborough Public School, but not enough to cover all his travel expenses, entry fees, etc. (Since May, hes raced every week this summer, as well as taking part in 8 out-of-town meets.) Thats where Sydenham came in: Danny, a shy person, was so determined to pursue his dream that he canvassed door-to-door in the village, raising the additional funds he needed.
BMX racing has recently been accepted as an Olympic sport, and will be included in the Beijing 2008 Olympics. Dannys determined be there representing Canada, and his proud Mom and three sisters are sure hell make it.
