Cottage Association Reps meet with NF Township

"Thanks for holding this meeting; it was long overdue, said one of the cottage association Presidents who spent the day on Saturday, June 12, listening to reports from Mayor Maguire, staff and Councillors from North Frontenac outlining the challenges faced by the township.

A variety of issues of concern to lake dwellers, from property assessments and taxes, roads, emergency measures, and waste management were explored, and the 25 or so association representatives had the opportunity to question the decisions of council.

After lunch, a presentation by the Frontenac Environmental Partnership on a GIS application they are hosting for Lake Associations was well received, and led a few Associations to join the Environmental Partnership on the spot. As well, Councillor Betty Hunter outlined some of the economic development and Communications strategies the township is working on, and the Mayor then asked the representatives to express their issues.

The goal of the event, which was an initiative of Mayor Maguire, was to foster an understanding of the constraints the township is working under, and to engage the seasonal residents, who make up 80% of the population of North Frontenac, in the political and cultural life of the township. From all accounts it was a success, and future events will be planned, although one representative asked if the next one could be called on a rainy day.
