Feature Article - October 12, 2006Sharbot Lake High School Commencement
byChava Field-Green
Commencement- the beginning, for the graduating students in the Sharbot Lake High School Auditorium last Friday, the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.
Proud parents, teachers, friends and staff came out to watch 48 young adults take the stage. Emcee Liz Steele-Drew read each graduate’s name along with a bit of information as to what they are up to now. All of the students stood proud as they received their diplomas and were recognized as high school graduates.
New Principal Roxanne Saunders kicked off the night by welcoming the audience and offering her congratulations and wisdom to the graduates. She then introduced recently retired Principal Tom Taylor. Mr. Taylor spoke about the different milestones in one’s life, and the many milestones that these young adults are now venturing towards. The speech had a very special meaning, as this is also Tom Taylor’s commencement into a post SLHS life; this is probably what made his speech so accessible to the audience.
MPP Leona Dombrowsky also said a few words about the education system and brought congratulations from the Premier of Ontario. To round off the speeches, Anne Goodfellow, trustee of the Limestone District School Board, spoke about the journey that the students have made and jested at how nicely they cleaned up.
But the real jewel of the night was the valedictory address by Annie McKinnon. Annie thanked parents and teachers alike, recounting memories that were knowingly laughed at by all; she spoke of the uniqueness of Sharbot Lake High School and the great community feeling of always having a support system in place. She finished with a few tears as she stated “Don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it happened” and got an immediate standing ovation.
