Frontenac Flyers split weekend

Pre-season games may not get you any points in the regular season but when the team is coming off a season with no wins, pre-season wins do mean a confidence boost and that’s what the Flyers are getting with their 1-1 start to the exhibition schedule.

Saturday’s game was a 6-2 win against the Picton Pirates. The game started off with some early offence by the Flyers in the first period when a goal was scored just 24 seconds into the game by Jason Dasilva, who had a breakout night scoring four goals. Just over two minutes later, the Flyers struck again on a power play goal from Zac Moran. Jeff Tobin and Max Debernardi assisted on the play. With 16:42 left to play in the period, Dasilva recorded his second goal of the game. The Flyers ended the period up by a score of 3-0.

Zac Moran started the scoring in the second period with another quick power play goal. Unfortunately Zac had to leave the game in the second period with an equipment problem. The Pirates finally found a crack in the Flyers goaltender, Corey Dunbar, on a shorthanded goal with twp minutes left in the period. The Flyers answered back with Dasilva’s third goal of the game with assists from Brooks Taylor and Max Debernardi. In the third, momentum grew for the Flyers with Dasilva’s fourth goal of the game. The Pirates would score once more late in the period to make the final tally 6-2.

Game two of the weekend against the Amherstview Jets started where the Flyers left off the night before with a power play goal from rookie Brett Doig with an assist from Jeff Tobin. They took that momentum into the second period but for the rest of the game they couldn’t find the back of the net. Amherstview scored seven unanswered goals in a penalty-filled second and third period. Frontenac Flyer Brooks Taylor was taken out of the game in the third period after a nasty hit from Jets Rob Lyman who received an intent to injure penalty.

Despite losing the second pre-season game, there are a lot of positive signs coming from the Flyers so far. The energy level of the team has been very high and even though there is still a lot of work to do before the Flyers start playing in the regular season, the confidence the team builds up in these games can only help them down the road. The Flyers travel to Napanee on Saturday, September 23 and to Amherstview on Sunday, September 24 to finish off the pre-season.
