Do you or someone you know have a child with a disability? Perhaps they have autism, a learning disability, ADHD, Down syndrome, or cerebral palsy, for example. Or perhaps your child is too young to have an assessment and you don't have a formal diagnosis yet, but you know that you need information and support. A new support group has started up in the Sharbot Lake area for parents and caregivers of children of any age with various disabilities. All of the parents involved so far felt that they could benefit from the support of others who understand their situation, as well as share information and resources, without having to travel to Kingston . The monthly meetings will be structured to include a formal learning component, such as a speaker or discussion of a specific topic, as well as an informal side for getting to know one another and allow for further discussion. Among the topics of interest are learning how to navigate the school system and social services, parenting siblings of exceptional children, learning more about various diagnoses, and self-care for parents/caregivers. There will be assistance with transportation costs and childcare.
