Land o'LakesCommunity ServicesAGM

by Cheryl Hartwick

This year, Land o’ Lakes Community Services’ Annual General Meeting will be on Tuesday, June 20 at the Lions Hall in Northbrook . The meeting will begin at 7pm with coffee, tea and sweets after the meeting. Everyone is welcome to attend the AGM, a great opportunity to learn about LOLCS.

Membership is open to all residents of our service area, providing they are of legal voting age, and will be available for a cost of $5/person. Membership is required to be eligible to vote on matters concerning the organization. As a member, you will have opportunity to have a voice in the direction of the agency. This year, members will vote on By-Law additions/amendments. The Board of Directors have approved the proposed changes, based on the advice of Peter Graham, a lawyer for Rural Legal Services, using our Letters Patent and Corporations Act.

The Board of Directors of LOLCS consists of a maximum of 12 active members in good standing, eight elected for a two-year term (four every other year). The remaining four are appointed by the Board, immediately following elections, for a one-year term. Appointees represent geographic and/or other areas of interest not already represented. Members of the organization can also nominate themselves or others for election to the Board of Directors. Members may also participate on standing and ad-hoc committees.

LOLCS is seeking “community-minded” individuals to participate on the Board of Directors and/or join the membership. If, as a member, you are interested in sitting on the Board of Directors then it is important to understand the role, duties and responsibilities. The role of the Board is to manage the affairs of the organization, not the day-to-day operations. The Board of Directors follows rules/guidelines for action from the Ontario Corporations Act, Letters Patent, By-Laws and Resolutions. Each member of the Board must ensure regular attendance at Board meetings held once a month.

As a member of LOLCS, you will also receive a copy of our new quarterly, membership newsletter. The newsletter is new and we hope that, through it, we can keep our members up-to-date on what is happening with your organization.

Land o’ Lakes Community Services is your community service organization. Please consider taking an active role. We look forward to seeing you at the Annual General Meeting.
