Eastern Ontario Garlic Award Winners

A surprise winner took the 2007 awards this year, walking away with the top prize in the annual championship. The heritage garden at Bellevue House, Kingston, the residence of Canada’s first Prime Minister, Sir John A Macdonald, won out over commercial growers in Eastern Ontario, copping the prize as top grower. Bellevue House took 1st prize in three of the four required classes and 2nd in the remaining class, becoming the Champion Garlic Grower for 2007. They received the Woodman Trophy and a cash prize of $100 donated by the National Farmers Union.

The Reserve Champions, Tim & Sue Asselstine of Cranberry Creek, were awarded the Woodman 2 Trophy and a cash prize of $50 donated by Oliver and Renate Haan, HaanOver View Farms of Marysville, Ontario. This was the Asselstines first time to enter this competition. They won one 1st, two 2nds and a 3rd with their entries, putting them in 2nd place overall.

The Runner-Up was Railway Creek Farm (Jean & Elly Finlayson), Madoc.

The Awards were inaugurated at the 1st Glorious Garlic Festival (Perth Garlic Festival) on August 16, 1997. They have been conducted at other Garlic Festivals in the region in following years to provide greatest opportunity for competition. They are open to all garlic growers in Eastern Ontario, whether home or commercial gardeners, and growers do not have to be participants in the host festival to enter. Growers compete in four classes: best garlic bulb, best display of 12 bulbs of the same strain, best collection of varieties and best garlic braid

The Eastern Ontario Garlic Awards were hosted this year by the Verona Garlic Festival on September 1, 2007. Judging was done by Anne Babcock, OHA Judge. Presentations were made by Paul Pospisil, Director, Garlic Awards Foundation during the festival ceremonies.
