A few months ago, I started with explaining the acronym of the word Lions. At that time my focus being on the Emergency Preparedness Plan was on the last three letters Our Nations Safety. In December while reflecting on the choices of our great association, I pointed to the letter L representing Liberty. So today, it seems only fitting to touch on the last letter, the I.
That small letter couldn't hold more power as it means Intelligence. Making our whole acronym: Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nations Safety.
Intelligence?
In 1917 a young man, Melvin Jones, came up with the concept of a club that serves the community. The group became Lions: the Knights of the Blind, the participants in the creation of the NGO Charter of the United Nations (UN), and the supporters of communities in 220 countries and regions around the world.
Where would we be without the Intelligence of those first Lions? We would not have clubs around the world with dedicated individuals who spend hours of their time, effort and care and financial resources to ensure their communities are safe and well served; and they do that every day with no expectations of reward or recognition from the communities.
The Lions Club of Land O’Lakes, our dear home, is one of those many clubs.
Intelligence was in launching the club by our Charter Members. Intelligence was in adopting a hall where the members of the club can offer multiple activities and initiatives to the community. Intelligence is in understanding the current needs of the community and adapting to those, without ever forgetting that we are part of a larger world of Lions.
How do I want to end this Roar? Slightly differently.
Till we meet again in Roar, read about Lions; keep our club in your hearts; and watch a short video about the Lions as they head annually to the UN to discuss, develop and build systems of support for the communities worldwide.
