Neighbour Concerned about Proposed Bi-Fuel Generation Project
Michela Gossage lives in the vicinity of the location of a proposed biofuel generation plant. The plant proponent, Originative Energy Solutions, has received the go-ahead from Central Frontenac to submit a bid to Ontario’s Independent Energy Systems Operator (IESO), on a 20 year power generation project, based at that location. Those contracts will be awarded next year.
Gossage is very concerned about the project and the ease with which the company received pre-approval from the township. She has started a petition, which is posted at Change.org, requesting that the township reconsider their decision to give preliminary approval.
The petition can be accessed by typing Central Frontenac into the search bar, at change.org. It has been signed by 211 people as of Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 9).
Gossage's comments from Change.org are reprinted below, in part.
"Biofuel gas generator plants, while touted as eco-friendly, have been linked to various negative impacts on health and the environment. According to research by the Environmental Protection Agency, pollu-tants such as nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter can be emitted from biofuel production and usage. These emissions pose serious health risks such as respiratory problems, cardio-vascular diseases, and might exacerbate existing health conditions amongst the residents in proximity.
Furthermore, the environmental implications cannot be ignored. A study published in the Journal of Cleaner Production highlights that the large-scale production of biofuels often leads to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and soil erosion. The Central Frontenac region is renowned for its natural beauty and rich biodiversity, all of which would be at risk if this plant was developed. The changes in land use and possible contamination of soil and water sources, threaten the delicate balance of our local ecosystem.
Moreover, the introduction of such an industrial project severely threatens local property values. Stud-ies, such as one from the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, have shown that proximity to industrial activi-ties frequently results in significant depreciation of property values. This impact on our home equity could prevent families from relocating or investing in other opportunities.
We must take action now to oppose this proposal and protect our community’s health, environment, and property values. Stand with us and demand the township revoke their support to Originative Energy Solutions’ bid with the IESO. Sign this petition and let your voice be heard for Central Frontenac's future.
