As our series on healthy living in the Frontenacs continues, I came across a lovely strength studio located in Tichborne, Ontario.
I had enjoyed chatting earlier with Jen about the studio’s name: "Skye's the Limit Fitness," a name that instantly brought a smile to my face. She noted that Skye was the middle name of her daughter, August, someone who had inspired this whole endeavor with her spunk and youthfulness.
The gym is a bright, welcoming space that was worlds apart from the dusty old garages you’d expect. This is no ordinary gym – it is a personalized fitness haven crafted by a woman who has turned her passion into a new career. Jen, August Skye’s mother, a dedicated personal trainer, greeted me with the kind of enthusiasm that could motivate even the most reluctant gym-goer.
"Welcome! I'm so glad you're here," she said, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "I've been in Tichborne for 30 years, and I've wanted to share my love for fitness with the community. Come on in, let's get started."
The gym was meticulously organized, with a power rack for bench presses and squats, an Olympic bar for deadlifting, and a variety of machines, including a leg press, leg extension, and leg curl. There was also a treadmill, an elliptical, and a collection of free weights and kettlebells. Resistance bands hung neatly on one wall, ready for a workout. It was clear that every piece of equipment had been thoughtfully chosen and placed.
We sat down for a free assessment, where she asked about my goals – was I looking to gain strength, improve mobility, or perhaps lose weight? Her genuine interest in my fitness journey was evident, and it was clear that she wanted to help me achieve lasting results. She explained that she offered customized sessions, beginning with a one-hour assessment to determine abilities and goals, followed by a tailored schedule based on individual needs.
As we talked, music played softly in the background, a personal touch that added to the gym's unique atmosphere. "I like to keep the music age-appropriate for my clients," she explained with a smile. "But when I'm working out alone, I crank up the heavy metal” she stated with a sheepish grin.
She shared her story of transitioning from 15 years of running a cleaning service to becoming a personal trainer. "About ten years ago, I started working out, and I fell in love with it. My body felt great, and I wanted to share that experience and passion with others." Her dedication was evident in the training she had undertaken, including a personal training certificate and a 200-hour yoga certification. She is also working with the Sharbot Lake Family Health Team as the Instructor for their community fitness program.
The gym is currently open for personal training five days a week, with her family time reserved for weekends. Sessions were reasonably priced at $50 per hour, plus HST. She walked me through a typical assessment, which included paperwork, goal setting, and discussing my current eating habits. We did a few exercises – squats, split squats, and wall slides – and tested my mobility with leg extensions and shoulder flexibility exercises. She took measurements and photos to track my progress and set up a schedule based on availability and our calendar coordination.
As we wrapped up, she mentioned her long-term goal of possibly offering gym memberships, a testament to her commitment to the community. "I'm here to help people reach their goals in a way that's sustainable," she said, her passion shining through every word.
Leaving Skye's the Limit Fitness, I felt inspired and motivated. This wasn't just a gym – it was a place where personal connections were made, and fitness goals were achieved with the guidance of someone who truly cared. And so, with renewed determination and the expert guidance of Skye's the Limit Fitness, my healthy living journey continues, fueled by the promise of lasting strength and wellness.
