It takes a village to raise a child has never been more true than when a child is ill.

Passionate about making the community closer and stronger, Lions members pooled their resources recently to help local youth receiving cancer treatments in Kingston.

“Lions met at the doors of the local cancer clinic in early March to make the trek to deliver 20 comfort bags to the outpatient clinic at the hospital,” explains Marie Wilkins, Treasurer of Storrington Lions Club. “These bags were designed for patients
ages 0-17 years to be used to keep them occupied at the clinic while they undergo their treatments.”

Organizers designed the bags to reflect the age of the recipient. Items include colouring books, crayons, novels, story books, hats, mitts, socks, journals, pens, note cards, card games, stuff animals, fuzzy blankets and water bottles.

According to Marie, the comfort bags are an ongoing project by the Lions to make the children’s time at the clinic more comfortable.

Delighted to deliver the first load of bags on March 4, Lion Shirley, Lion Laurie, Lion Roseanne and Lion Suzanne were greeted by Christine of Child Life Services. “We’d like to thank our community for helping us make the bags a reality,” says Marie. “We appreciate the help of
businesses such as Sally Blasko of L&A Mutual, Trousdale’s, Alliance and South Frontenac Township. Although Storrington Lions Club created these helpful bags, it had the help of other clubs such as Bath, Kingston, Kingston Lakeshore West, Verona, Newburgh-Camden, Pittsburgh Township and Sydenham.

It was remarkable to see these clubs pull together to help some of the most vulnerable members of our society.”
