KASSAA Winter Sports Season Gets Underway

The short gap between the fall and winter sports seasons for the Kingston Association of Secondary School Athletic Associations (KASSAA) is over, as boys basketball, girls volleyball, and hockey are all underway.

Sydenham High School has senior and junior teams competing in basketball, as well as a varsity team (all grades) in both girls and boys hockey, and Granite Ridge Education Centre in Sharbot Lake has a senior girls volleyball team competing this year.

In early season boys basketball action last week, the Senior Sydenham Golden Eagles took their opening home game over Bayridge SS by 58-35 score, and the junior team also beat Bayridge, 49-25. Both teams are playing at home on Thursday, December 5 against Kingston SS, the senior team at 4pm, and the juniors at 5:30.

Also last week, the SHS Golden Eagles junior girls volleyball team got off to a fast start at an away match, at Bayridge, winning 3 sets to 0. The senior team made it a 4-0 sweep by SHS teams over Bayridge last week, by winning 3 sets to 0 as well. The senior girls were back in action this week for an away match at Sharbot Lake on December 3, and both teams are playing at Kingston SS on Thursday, Dec. 5.

The hockey season got underway for the Sydenham varsity girls team on Monday, December 2, at Holy Cross. Holy Cross beat SHS by a 5-0 score. The girls are back in action next Monday, December 9, a home game against Napanee.

The varsity boys team kicked off their season, also an away game, on Tuesday (Dec. 3) against Regiopolis. Ernestown defeated the Golden Eagles in that game, 5-2.

The Granite Ridge Gryphons girls volleyball team were in Lasalle last week to start their season on November 28th, where they were beaten 3 sets to 0. They were back in action, this time in Sharbot Lake, on Tuesday afternoon, against Sydenham, and Sydenham swept that match 3-0. The Gryphons end the week by playing at Regiopolis on Thursday, December 5.
