John Jordan was elected as the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario’s MPP for Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston in 2022. He is also the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness. Through-out his time in office, he has been an advocate for improving long-term care facilities, increasing health care funding in Carleton Place, Perth, Smith Falls and increasing funding for grain operators, beef and dairy farmers and syrup producers. He was born and raised in Lanark County and he and his family operate a farm in Montague Township. He responded to the News via email
1. What motivated Mr. Jordan to re-rerun as MPP candidate for Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston?
Personally, I have a vested interest in Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston. My past experience in health care motivated me to run in 2022, and I feel I can continue to contribute to improving our access to quality of care; i.e. the expansion of primary care, investments in our hospitals, and most importantly, increasing our home resource capacity. Living rurally, with an agricultural background makes me sensitive to the needs of our agriculture sector and am encouraged by the PC government's drive to support the agri-food industry in Ontario. This is indicative through investments in the Beef Feeder Program and the $100 million investment in the Agriculture Risk Management Program.
There are important changes and investments that I am actively working on, and am committed to seeing them through after this election.
2. What does Mr. Jordan feel went well this term?
One of the PC Government's main areas of focus has been growing the economy. Creating a business friendly environment that has attracted new investments and created over 700,000 new jobs. This growth supports our investment in Health care, mental health services, Long Term Care and infrastructure necessary for new housing. Locally, we have seen many successes including affordable housing projects, base funding for all hospitals in the riding, MRI investments on Smiths Falls, over 50 hospital capital projects across the province, 3 new medical schools, expansion of nursing training opportunities...and the list goes on.
3. What does Mr. Jordan want to improve on?
There is always room for improvement. Continuing to improve access to primary care is key to taking the pressure off of our hospitals. There are many elements to that, including:
- Increasing interdisciplinary core clinics, family health teams, and nurse practitioner led clinics
- Supporting and expanding our Community Paramedic Programs
- Building upon the existing investment in three new Long Term Care homes in our riding, we will soon be breaking ground on a fourth. Investments in the Providence Care and the Kingston Health Sciences Centre will also greatly support the needs of Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston
Housing and the necessary infrastructure to support growing communities is also a primary focus from communal water systems in Frontenac County to the water distribution system in Smiths Falls and the sewage capacity of Mississippi Mills.
I plan to be there for all constituents and continue to work for their priorities.
4. The Ford government has been criticized for giving too much attention to urban issues like bike lanes, traffic tunnels and public transportation. In what ways does Mr. Jordan plan to ensure that his rural riding is getting the attention it needs in Queen's Park?
I don't subscribe to this criticism and don't have to look far for the answer.
The Ford Government has created three ministries, with mandates specifically directed at rural ridings:
- Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agri-business whose primary focus is to grow our agri-food sector by 30% by 2030. This ministry has made other key investments like a 50% increase in our Beef Feeder Program and $100 million investment in our Risk Management Program, and strengthening the Dairy Processing sector across the province.
- The Ministry of Rural Affairs has introduced the Rural Economic Development Strategy designed to: develop and grow local rural business; attract and retain rural workers; build strong and vibrant rural communities.
- The Ministry of Infrastructure investments in High Speed Internet. As of November 2024, this $4 billion project has connected over 550,000 homes and businesses.
In addition to these specific efforts, there has been a commitment to rural needs in other significant portfolios at Queen's Park, which has led to province-wide investments in rural hospitals, primary care, water and sewage systems aimed at supporting growing rural communities.
5. The Ford government has put a lot of focus on the tariffs that Trump has paused for 30 days, how will you as MPP ensure that the people in your riding are comforted during this politically tumultuous time? AND 6. The Ford government has also been criticized for focusing solely on the tariffs issue during this election, does Mr. Jordan have a plan to ensure other issues such as Health care, childcare, education, agriculture, conservation etc., do not get overshadowed?
Tariffs have the potential to negatively impact our economy, our workers and our ability to continue to support our most vital systems and infrastructure. These include Health Care, infrastructure, housing, social services and education. The government knows this is not an narrowly-focused either/or decision, and we will continue to fight for all Ontarians and all our priorities.
7. Is there anything else Mr. Jordan would like to say to the people of Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston?
I would like to encourage everyone to get out and cast a ballot on or before February 27. I look forward to continuing to be there for all constituents going forward.
