1948-2024
With broken hearts, we announce that Andy passed away suddenly at home in the loving presence of his soul mate, best friend, and wife Karen (Irvine Bird).
Son of the late Alberta and Donald Bird, the anchor and cornerstone of our family, Andy will be deeply missed and forever cherished by his son Jody, who grieves both a father and best friend; his stepson Jason Irvine, granddaughter Caelen (Gavin) and great grandchildren Raylen and Ryker. Also left to mourn are his sisters, Ann (Jon) Sutherland, nephew Andrew (Daina Schreiber) Sutherland; Sue (Bruce) Rutherford, and brother-in-law Wayne Rutherford.
A true renaissance man of integrity, compassion, honesty, kindness and generosity. Andy’s interests were wide and varied.
An athlete, at an early age, a track runner, basketball and softball champ, he continued his love of softball into his adult years playing centre field for the Verona Merchants. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed many adventures hunting, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. Together, Andy and Karen explored the world travelling and enjoying ocean and river cruises in the Mediterranean, Europe, and the Caribbean.
His professional career began as an elementary teacher, mentoring, guiding, and influencing new generations and concluded after a fortyfour-year career as a Detective Sergeant with the Kingston City Police. He touched the lives of many and truly made a difference.
As his family, we were blessed to have him as such an instrumental, loving, and guiding force. For those who wish, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada or a charity of their choice.
In keeping with Andy’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service. A private family remembrance will be held. Online condolences, photos and memories can be shared at www.goodfellowsfuneralhome.com
