William Edward Johnston, known to all as Ed, passed away peacefully at home with his family on January 24, 2026, at the age of 87.

Ed was born on April 3, 1938, in Gananoque, Ontario. He was raised in Rockport, where he also raised his family. He built a successful business under the name W.E. Johnston, working along the St. Lawrence River (a true River Rat).

Later in his working life, Ed took a position with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. As retirement approached in the mid-1990s, Ed and his wife moved to Ardoch after purchasing Hillside Haven Campground along the Mississippi River.

The water was where Ed felt most at home, and he held a deep love and respect for it. His talent and artistry were found in woodworking.

Ed is lovingly remembered by his five children: Kathy Davis (John), Penny Hawley (Harvey), Bill Johnston (Lisa), Chuck Johnston, and Laura Johnston; his eight grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his siblings Dick Johnston, Eugene Johnston, Elaine Johnston, and Wendy Merkley.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Johnston, his brother Douglas Johnston, and his parents Don and Ethel Johnston.

A graveside service will be held on April 25 at 11:30 a.m., followed by a celebration of life from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Rockport Recreation Hall. Family and friends are welcome to gather and share memories of Ed. Donations may be made to the Rockport Recreation Hall in Ed’s memory.
