Perth and District Historical Society - May 18, 2023 Meeting: Two Documentary Films Showcasing Area History - Allison Margot Smith, our guest for this month’s meeting, has been making a name for herself in the field of documentary films. The Township of Rideau Lakes partnered with Allison to make a series of short historical documentaries covering their region. For this meeting, we look at two: The Rideau Canal: The Big Breakthrough, using the watercolour paintings by Thomas Burrowes; and then Fettercairn: WWI on Indian Lake telling the story of the WWI hospital opened by Agnes Etherington at her cottage on Indian Lake for victims suffering from “shell shock” now recognized as PTSD. The additional films from the series of the first four cover riots in Delta and Philipsville in the 1830s and taverns and transportation networks also in the 1830s. We hope to feature those at a later date. The Perth and District Historical Society is dedicated to learning about and popularising our history and is a forum for discussion and celebration of our area’s rich culture and heritage. The meetings are held the third Thursday of the month and are open to the public, at 7:30 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion, Perth-Upon-Tay, Branch 244, home of the Hall of Remembrance, 26 Beckwith St. E. in Perth.
