Arden

Happy belated anniversary to friends Tim and Penny Cota!

The Arden Seniors held their Annual BBQ for members and friends September 5. There was a wonderful turnout and everyone enjoyed the BBQ plus yummy salads and desserts. If you are new to the area, drop in and see what the group is all about. The group meets the first Tuesday of each month.

The Arden Church wants you to keep October 21, 10am to 2pm in mind as they will be holding their Fall Vendor Sale. There will be something for everyone including a bake sale and a grab-and-go lunch.

Coffee hour continues Thursday mornings at the Arden Church.

Connections, Adult Learning is offering free courses this fall season. A series of courses are offered including no-till gardening, skills to set up and run QuickBooks, build your own website, spreadsheet basics and a course to prep you for a Personal Support Worker. All of these programs are free and available to you by contacting Connections, Adult Learning at 613-279-2499 (Sharbot Lake) or 613-336-0691 (Northbrook), or you can email at This email address is being protected from spambots. There will be a spaghetti dinner Saturday, September 9, 5pm to 7pm at the Arden Legion. Admission is a free will donation. There is a gluten free menu along with a vegetarian menu for those who wish. Garlic bread and dessert will accompany the dinner.

I found a few fun facts for this weeks’ column. On September 14,1949, the Lone Ranger made its television premier. In 1984 the baseball season was cancelled due to an owner player strike and in 1994 Prince Harry was born. Enjoy your week!!

Chris Murphy will take the stage on September 24th at 2pm at the Battersea United Church for an afternoon of music by Canadian songwriters. The event is open for all, admission by free will donation.

Be part of Wild Woods Art Walk, a unique, enchanting outdoor installation of art along the Milburn Creek Trail happening in conjunction with Battersea Pumpkin Festival. For the month of August, twelve of our Pine Meadow residents along with the staff participated in a fitness challenge by working on personal attainable fitness goals throughout the month. Each resident in fact achieved their personal goal and most exceeded. It was great to hear swelling voices in pride while sharing their personal success stories!

Congratulations to Parky and Bonnie on the 25th anniversary of their Parky’s Dollar Store in Northbrook.

In spite of the damp weather, Pam Lemke, the Golden Girls, the Old Pharts and Pine Meadow rocked their recent Alzheimer walk and barbecue with meat from Milligans , bake sale, and ever famous coffee. The day featured music, by JUST US TWO, ice cream cones, donated by 41 scoops, a gigantic bake sale table, auction items and monetary donations from Hooks Castle, Lemke Electric, Diana Walker of Royal La Page, In the Bag, Nowell Motors and the Lions Club and many generous community members (with apologies to any folks/businesses I might have missed!!). A special award was given to Kevin Ryan the first ever, “Ambassador at Large” award for his unwavering support of the Alzheimer Society. Mississippi
by Pearl Killingbeck

On the 29th August, Shirley, Elaine, Stephanie, Brian and Bev were all in for a visit. Donna came the same day pulling her red tote that she takes with her to cut people’s hair when away from her salon. Thank you Donna. I look beautiful again. A good day – I sat up for 6 hours that day. Elaine brought supper and cucumbers. Bev Elliott was in with more beautiful, beautiful glads - my favourite flower. Sharon and Dale dropped in on Sunday when I was snoozing but they left me a coffee and some chili. My roommate is from McDonald’s Corners. She has been here since December. Yesterday I had Harriet and Steve Riddell, Elaine, Rick and Brandy for visitors. I enjoyed seeing all the back to school pictures of my great grandchildren and friends’ children on Facebook yesterday morning.

Our deepest sympathy to Lynda Russell on the tragic drowning of her partner Dave at Burnstown on the Madawaska on Sunday evening. Lynda, you are in our prayers.

Get well wishes to Barb Sproule who is in here on the second floor. Darwyn and Cheryl were in to visit me and let me call Olive and I had a wonderful visit on the phone with her. I took 11 steps the other day but usually I only make about 6 or 7. It is nice to sit out in the chair every day.

News from the Snow Road Community Centre: The next social dinner will be on Wednesday, September 13th serving at 6pm. The Association will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Monday, 25th September at 7pm. The next music night will be on Saturday, September 30th, featuring the Ottawa Guitar Trio.

News from Snow Road Snowmobile Club. There will be a General Club meeting on Thursday, September 14th, 2023 at 7pm at the clubhouse, 1106 Gemmill Road, Snow Road. Come out and learn how you can help with the trails and clubhouse activities for the upcoming season.

My daughter Pam reports that the Alzheimer’s Society had a great day at the Pine Meadow Retirement Home in Northbrook on Friday 8th September. Music by JUST US TWO, ice cream cones donated by 41 Scoops, a gigantic bake sale table made with love by community members, mostly the Golden Girls, the GG were with me every step of the way and I cannot thank you enough for all your help. Numerous auction items and monetary donations from Hooks Castle, Lemke Electric, In the Bag, Nowell Motors and the Lions Club and all the generous community members that donated to our cause. A delicious BBQ with meat supplies from Milligan’s given at a hugely discounted price, cooked by the Old Pharts, and sponsored by Diana Walker, Royal LePage. We also had North Frontenac Mayor Gerry Lichty helping out at the BBQ. A huge shout out to the residents and staff for offering your home for this worthwhile event and we raised over $8,000!
