Battersea/Storrington
by Chris Pantrey

What is a skeleton's favourite dessert? I scream.

Have you seen the lilacs blooming on Battersea Rd, just south of Bear Creek? Apparently, they are confused! After a fairly wet summer, now the cooler temperatures and hours of daylight are mimicking spring, forcing them into bloom. Apparently this won't hurt the plant, but may result in a few less flowers in the spring. Given the abundance along that stretch, I'm sure we won't even notice.

Dust off your best dancing boots and head out to the Lion's Club this Saturday, October 19, from 8-1 for their Harvest Moon dance. Live music by Whiskey Smoke.  Only $20 per person.

Looking ahead, there will be a Service Canada Help Session October 30th from 10am to 3pm at the Storrington Lions Hall. An information session is to help community members apply for the following programs and services: Social Insurance Number (SIN), Employment Insurance (EI), Canada Pension Plan (CPP), Old Age Security (OAS), and the CDCP - Canadian Dental Care Plan.  For more information and to register call Marie at 613-449-4744 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. Battersea Pumpkin Festival fun fact! 1,355 people went thru the Haunted Barn this year!! That is an amazing number! However, it is important to note,  unless someone comes forward to take on this important venue, this will have been the last year for Festival scares: (The same 3 volunteers have been coordinating the barn since it's inception and it's time for some new blood! Pun intended!) They will gladly offer some tips, tricks and advice, along with a massive number of props, but a new barn coordinator is required.  Reach out thru the contact us section on our website or call 613-353-6653.

Are you tired of packing everyone up for an hour-long drive just for photos with Santa, but you love Christmas? We are wanting to save families the drive to Belleville, Napanee or Kingston for Santa photos while providing quality photos at a fraction of the price! The idea is to have a Santa photo day in Cloyne where the proceeds are donated to the food bank. Would you be interested in local Santa photos? We are thinking of having photos from 10am to 2pm on a Saturday. What does the community think?

Some recent comings and goings included Mitchell Gurnsey, Nicki Gowdy, Kathleen Goodfellow and her daughter Muriel; Jim and Pete MacPherson and Brad Beattie, and many many others who helped out, and attended our recent United Church Vendor Bash. It truly was old home day. Also Thanksgiving brought home many Newtons, Delines, Gurnseys, Cowicks, Kelfords, Blakes, Clancys, Petersons, Arneys and many more. Soon we will be into that two week family vacation called “Hunting Season” when everyone comes home to hunt and our folks cook up a storm of hunting foods - like butter tarts, pickled eggs, jerky, and of course meat and potatoes to stick to your ribs when on the range. We know we can count on folks minding the fence and property lines with care, while practising safe hunting.

Neil Purchase and friends offered an open mic at the Arden Legion on Thanskgiving weekend. Check it out on the second Sat of the month from 1- 5pm.

This Sun. Oct. 20 Henderson United Church morning worship is post-poned in favour of one union service at Arden United Church at 10 to pay farewell to the Rev. Kaitlyn Ostrander. A pot-luck lunch follows worship. Rev. Ostrander has accepted a call to another area – however, worship services will continue as always at all three United Churches with guest leadership.

We are tragically sorry to announce that the ongoing hall renovations in Harlowe is forcing the cancellation of the Open Mic/Old Time Fiddlers until the new year!! How will we live and celebrate Christmas?? Old time fiddlers will resume Sat, Jan 18, 2025, and Open Mic – Sat, Jan 25, 2025.

Please set aside Sun. Nov. 3 for Arden United Church’s Remembering Sing-a-long, featuring many old time favourites that you can sing your heart out on with piano accompaniment by Carol and Sylvia. Coffee and tea social follows.
