Feature Article - March 8, 2007Friends of the Salmon River want your ideas
Friends of the Salmon River is a group of volunteers who care about the Salmon River . Its focus is to promote stewardship of the watershed. Although the group has only been in existence three years, it has already accomplished a great deal. Through partnerships with local government agencies an extensive habitat study has been conducted to establish the health of the entire watershed. The grade four classes of schools within the watershed participate in a half day workshop each year to learn how their daily activities can help to maintain healthy habitats. A highlight this past fall was to have the Honorable Peter Milliken, Speaker of the House, be at the launching of a book about the river entitled “Salmon River Watershed: Jewel of Eastern Ontario”. It has proven to be so popular that a second printing is being considered. The guided bus tour of the watershed each fall has also been a hit - sold out each year. Presentations by guest speakers at local communities are always well received. The list of work by the group goes on…
Where to from here? In order to get a better understanding of the issues faced along the waterway, residents and users of the watershed are invited to attend a forum to discuss its health. Through small group discussions participants will have the opportunity to share their views. The information gathered from this series of meetings will be brought together and help shape future projects and activities carried out by Friends of the Salmon River .
Please express your opinions by participating at one of the following venues: March 14 - Northbrook Lions Hall; March 29 - Tamworth Library; April 12 - Kennebec Community Hall ( Arden ); April 18 - Lonsdale W. I.
All meetings will be from 7:00 9:00 p.m. Door prizes and refreshments will be an added bonus!
