Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is taking place on Saturday, December 14, 2024 and organizers are inviting volunteers to help count birds in their yards or join a survey team to census birds across a larger area.

The Frontenac CBC was established in 2015 by Carolyn Bonta and Michael Johnson, with support from The Friends of Frontenac Park and the Kingston Field Naturalists.

Now in its tenth year, “count day” typically kicks off with an optional volunteer round-up in Sydenham, following which survey teams and individuals spend part or all of the day counting birds in the census area, returning at dusk for dinner and socializing.

Several additional events are planned for the tenth anniversary of the Frontenac CBC.

The public is invited to drop in for a “Winter Birds 101” crash course from 9-9:30 am at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall in Sydenham (4376 William Street; main Hall entrance on Amelia Street) with a specimen display and tips for identifying our local winter birds.

Wintergreen Studios (90 Wintergreen Lane, off Canoe Lake Road) is hosting a more elaborate winter bird workshop and guided count from 10 am to 3 pm that is free of charge but registration is required. Families with children ages 4 and up will enjoy a Christmas Bird Count for Kids from 1-3 pm at the Legion Hall, complete with bird specimens, interactive activities, and a short walk on gentle terrain to count birds.

Christmas Bird Counts census an area that is 24 km2 in size and circular in shape. The Frontenac circle is centered around Frontenac Provincial Park, and also includes Gould Lake Conservation Area; Sydenham, Hartington, Perth Road, Verona, and Godfrey; and several properties held by Nature Conservancy of Canada and the Queen’s University Biological Station.
