My mind drifts back to simpler times whenever I approach Stage Coach Road. I picture an old dirt road frequented by stagecoaches, horses, and buggies, where townsfolk emerged from rural corners to gather at the bustling hub of activity. The limestone building stood as a beacon of welcome and refuge, offering weary travelers a communal space to rest.
As the years flicker by in my mind, the road evolves—a film reel of transformation. Dirt gives way to cobblestones, then asphalt. Stagecoaches are replaced by early motorcars, which sputter into the scene, eventually overtaking them with the smooth glide of modern vehicles.
The limestone building, a symbol of resilience, stands weathered by storms and shifting eras. Its worn facade now stands beside a gleaming new addition of solid glass, refracting sunlight into shimmering beams of hope. The contrast of the historic and the modern speaks to a narrative of resilience and renewal, a bridge connecting the past to the present.
Inside, the energy is palpable. It's Community Champions Week at Southern Frontenac Community Services, and the morning of March 19th buzzes with activity. The "March for Meals" Celebrity Ride-Along, a significant event taking place this past week, is an opportunity for the Meals on Wheels team to showcase their work and the impact they have on the community. They prepare to deliver more than food—a sense of connection and care to local seniors.
Drivers gather for light refreshments, exchanging stories about the clients they serve. Speeches follow, expressing gratitude for the participants and highlighting the unique contributions of each community champion. Addressing the room, the mayor reflects on the challenges of today's world, observing, "People are wondering, 'What can we afford? What's going to happen?' Now, more than ever, it's essential to come together as a community to support one another.”
With a group photo capturing the moment, drivers and guests pair up for their routes. Meals on Wheels offers more than sustenance; it delivers dignity and human connection. Today's menu includes shepherd's pie, soup, and cobbler—a comforting spread served three times a week, tailored to client preferences. Chef Penny notes that the menu adapts to the seasons, with soups giving way to fresh salads in warmer weather. She also highlights the critical role of volunteers, whose efforts ensure meals are prepared, packaged, and stored for those in need.
Outside, vehicles hum softly, packed with warm, fragrant containers. Each route represents a lifeline for the 40-50 clients scattered throughout the southeastern area, including elderly individuals living alone, people with disabilities, and those recovering from illness. Whether they're cherishing their vibrant memories or navigating temporary challenges, each recipient receives more than a meal—a reminder that they're not alone.
Before departure, I was honoured to meet the celebrity participants and capture their camaraderie in a heartfelt group photo. Among the dedicated champions were Mayor Ron Vandewal and CAO Louise Fragnito, joined by these local luminaries:
- Nicole Potter of Scarlett & Rosie Floral Co., whose stunning floral arrangements spread joy and beauty.
- Nicole Van Camp of Nicole's Gifts offers handcrafted treasures for every occasion.
- Chad Van Camp of Verona Hardware Limited is a go-to expert for home improvement advice and supplies.
- Mark Revelle of Mark's Mushrooms is known for cultivating fresh, flavourful local produce.
- Kim Perry of Food Less Travelled advocates sustainability and local living.
- Will Trousdale of Trousdale's Home Hardware Building Centre is a cornerstone for community DIY needs.
- Shauna Braithwaite of Lenny's Deli brings vibrant energy and hearty, delicious offerings.
The businesses selected for the Celebrity Ride-Along represent more than just local commerce—they exemplify a commitment to giving back and supporting community-driven initiatives. Each participant is chosen for their dedication to fostering a stronger, more connected community through their work. Whether it's through creating spaces that bring people together, advocating for sustainability, or championing causes that uplift those in need, these businesses have proven themselves as vital contributors to the fabric of South Frontenac. Their involvement in this event is a natural extension of their ongoing efforts to make a meaningful difference.
The group's enthusiasm was infectious, setting the perfect tone for the day ahead. As the vehicles departed, armed with meals and determination, it was evident this wasn't just an errand—it was a mission of compassion, delivering nourishment and humanity to those who rely on it.
Although I didn't accompany the deliveries this year, the stories shared by volunteers and staff vividly depicted the profound impact. Each stop was met with gratitude and joy, underscoring the program's significant role in combating senior hunger and isolation.
Witnessing the dedication of everyone involved in the Celebrity Ride-Along was a powerful reminder of the critical work Meals on Wheels performs. It's not just about delivering food—it's about fostering community, extending care, and uplifting lives. Your involvement is integral to their mission.
As I left the Grace Centre, inspired by the generosity and spirit of those involved, I was reminded of the many ways to support Meals on Wheels—by volunteering, donating, or simply spreading the word. Though the Celebrity Ride-Along has concluded, its ripple effect of kindness and community will extend far beyond March for Meals.
