Feature Article - January 10, 2008 Plevna LCBO store tops Spirit of GivingWhen the figures were counted in the LCBO’s United Way fundraising campaign, the Spirit of Giving, the top store wasn’t in a major metropolitan area – it was in the village of Plevna.
Based on the size of store and the percentage of customers donating, the Plevna LCBO store came out on top out of 602 LCBO stores across Ontario,. That is a tributeto the enthusiasm of employeesand the local community who supported them so generously.
Customers were asked to contribute $2. More than one in three customers at the Plevna store(34 per cent) contributed, and a total of $1,134 was raised.
“We just kept asking,” says manager Marilyn Tooley, who credits the store’s success to the support of customers and CSRs Rhonda Watkins, Cheryl Dunham and Audrey Gorr. “This is a small community so we asked a lot of customers more than once and most were happy to make a donation.”
Plevna and its two neighbouring villages have a combined permanent population of about 600.
Altogether, the Spirit of Giving campaign brought in $581,000.
