His Excellency Manuel Estuardo Roldan, Ambassador to Guatemala, cut the ribbon to launch the bus on a trek through the United States, and Mexico to Guatemala, where it will be met by Jose Yac of CEDEC (Centro de Estudios para el Desarrollo Y la Cooperacion, a Mayan health NGO). The clinic will be equipped with a medical team including a doctor, nurse, healthcare promoter and bookkeeper. It will serve the Guatemalan western highlands and will pass through each village every 30 days or so. For the first time CEDEC will be able to offer a sterile environment for examinations and treatment, keep medical records on a computer as well as on paper, and have equipment to better provide service to thousands of indigenous Guatemalans who will have had no previous medical attention.

Perth Mayor John Fenik, and Randy Hillier, MPP for Lanark - Frontenac - Lennox and Addington also spoke at the ribbon cutting, mentioning their pride in the Guatemala Stove Project for continuing to improve the lives of countless Mayans.

In February, stove project volunteers will travel to Guatemala for the ninth year to build stoves for families in need. More than 3500 masonry cook stoves have been built thus far. This year’s group of 20 or so volunteers will be flying to Guatemala while the refurbished bus/clinic is being driven down by volunteers Regan Lee, Paul Huraney and Louis Marchena. The trio will be driving for 8 days, 16 hours a day and will meet CEDEC in Guatemala City.
