The Frontenac Flyers met the Picton Pirates on Sunday night for their first home game of the season at the Frontenac Arena. Cameron the Bog Lemming performed the ceremonial puck drop at center ice that started the game.

The Flyers were aiming for a win after losing their two previous games, the first to the Pirates 12-2 and the second to the Amherstview Jets 15-0.

Head Coach Jeff Denna explained that the team was off to a rough start in their first away game with only 12 players on the bench. An injury to their starting goalie did not help and Denna said “After that injury, you could see the team really deflate.”

Denna also said, “We’re going to have our good games and our bad games but we’re definitely going to be entertaining.” His words proved true when the Flyers came out strong early in the first period and Flyers Jamieson Murray scored. Picton tied it up near the end of the period in a power play goal scored by Liam McFall.

Picton took the lead midway through the second period, and a roughing penalty called on the Flyers resulted in a power play goal by Picton that put the Pirates in the lead by two.

Coming into the third the Flyers held on and midway through the period, Joel Hawkins put them within reach of their first win, but Picton scored their fourth with just under five minutes left, ending the game 4-2 for Picton.

Flyers captain and centre Mykel Steeves reflected on the team’s performance. “We’re coming together and figuring it out and we’re going to have another good season. We’re just going to keep playing hard and win some games. We have a lot of young talent and a lot of older guys who really are into playing hard. The losses are always tough but we’re definitely aiming to make the playoffs again this year.”

Coach Denna was pleased with the team’s effort. “It was a much better game tonight and the team stayed positive throughout the entire game… We still have a lot of work to do but the will is definitely there.”

Frontenac Flyers are helping Canadians warm up for the Olympics. When the medals are being handed out next February, we all expect to hear our national anthem played often. In order to rehearse, the Flyers are looking for volunteers to sing “O Canada” at each of their home games.
