20 Years of Trail Tradition: Sydenham Fall Trail Run Marks a Milestone

On October 26th, the quiet trails of Sydenham, Ontario, will come alive with celebration as the Sydenham Fall Trail Run marks its 20th anniversary. What began in 2005 as a grassroots initiative by local trail enthusiast Derek Spafford has grown into a beloved seasonal tradition, drawing over 125 racers each year to the scenic lakeside course.

I still remember my first time, years ago, as we departed from the point. My nerves were on edge as the crowd began to find its pace, the faster racers lapping me with ease. I remember the peacefulness of the lake and the cool breeze, while volunteers cheered me on. Every racer was there for their own reason: to achieve a personal best, recover from an injury, try something new, or reconnect with nature. Each story—private, individual—shared a common theme of movement, community, and challenging oneself to get off the couch.

Derek, known for his passion for endurance sports, not only launched the fall trail run but also hosted a popular snowshoe race series that kept runners active through the harshest winters. His vision was simple: create accessible, community-driven events that celebrate the joy of running in nature.

After a brief pandemic pause, the race was revived in 2022 thanks to Michele McShane, who refused to let the tradition fade. At the time, Michele and Tammy were co-hosting the Cataraqui Adventure Trek, and their commitment to outdoor adventure made them natural stewards of the event. That year, Jen Pinarski stepped in as race director, and by 2023, MT Adventures officially took the reins, expanding the trail run series and embracing Sydenham as the season finale.

This year’s race is significant—not only does it mark two decades of the Sydenham Fall Trail Run, but it also celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Cataraqui Adventure Trek. These dual milestones reflect the enduring spirit of the local running community and the dedication of those who’ve kept it thriving.

The 8K course begins past Foodland, winds out to Boyce Island, loops along Clearwater Road, and finishes on the track. It’s a flat, fast route with minimal hills, perfect for seasoned trail runners and curious road racers alike. The trail hugs the shoreline of Sydenham Lake, offering runners breathtaking views of shimmering water, golden leaves, and crisp autumn skies. Groomed paths and gentle terrain make it ideal for all levels, including walkers, joggers, and competitive runners.

The event also includes the Little Eagles Trail Run—a 2K kids’ race for ages 12 and under, complete with bibs, medals, and snack packs. It’s a gentle introduction to trail running, emphasizing fun, participation, and personal challenge.

Runners range in age from 9 to 74, with growing female participation and a welcoming atmosphere for spectators and families. The fastest finish time last year was 26 minutes, while the final finisher took 1 hour and 24 minutes—proof that this race truly embraces all paces and all people.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary, organizers have created a special edition sweatshirt and will award podium medals across age and gender categories. A bib prize draw adds excitement, and in a nod to tradition, fleece socks—once lovingly made by Derek’s mom—will be crafted by Michele’s mom for this year’s draw.

Post-race festivities include a hearty meal of sweets, treats, and sandwiches at the local Legion, which also serves as race HQ. Registration is $65, with a price increase after October 12th. Volunteers are still needed, and anyone interested can reach out via [email protected].

Whether you're chasing a personal best or simply soaking in the fall colours, the Sydenham Fall Trail Run welcomes everyone. Enjoy autumn at its finest—Sydenham Lake, fresh air, and a community that runs together.
