Crow Lake Road Concerns at Central Frontenac Council

Jane Anderson, a resident of Crow Lake, appeared before Council to talk about a specific issue with her property, in addition to other issues with Crow Lake Road through the village.

Her first is drainage from behind her home, which runs through township property and threatens to flood her out. She said that the township put in a “swale and a berm about 9 years ago to direct the water to a culvert by the road” but that erosion has resulted in the whole swale breaking apart.

“My husband and I have come up with a temporary solution using sand bags, but something needs to be done there,” she said.

Her second issue is more general, the state of Crow Lake Road from the railway tracks, to the west, right through to the eastern end of the village.

The township did a stop gap repair to the road itself, to address its extremely poor state of repair, using cold patch.

The repair “truly wasn’t especially effective,” said Jane Anderson, and “potholes started to re-appear the next day”. She added that ¾ inch gravel was laid down with no top coating and it all washed away, and much of it has ended up in her own parking lot.

“I have pictures of all this,” she said.

She said the most important thing with the “’road resurfacing – air quotes – is that the speed of traffic has increased tremendously.”

The steep embankments on the narrow, poorly maintained road, with no guardrails, results in vehicles spinning off the road. There have been numerous incidents of vehicles coming off the road, dropping off the side to a ravine.

“It is a throughway for large trucks that you can’t put through that road. I don’t see a solution to this.”

“We will certainly pass this information along to our public works manager ,” said Mayor Frances Smith.”

Councillor Susan Irwin said that the Andersons had spoken with her and that she did assist them in filing a complaint, “over a month ago with public works. I spoke with our public works, and sent emails, and so far we haven’t had a response, so somewhat disappointing, but I know that they have been very busy so I’m hoping that with Jane’s in person presentation, that there will be, at least a visit.”

“We will follow up, at least in terms of looking at guard rails,” said Frances Smith.
