New recycling rules and landfill “police’
Have you been to a landfill in Frontenac County since the new recycling rules have been implemented on January 1st of this year?
I am a strong advocate of recycling however to have your recycle bags inspected by the landfill "police" has become absurd to say the least. Having bags of aluminium (pop cans) and plastic liquid containers refused because they are "contaminated" (the favourite word being used by our hard-working landfill employees) by a few visible drops of pop at the bottom of the bag is ludicrous.
When the metal is melted down to recycle somehow all the paint on the cans is removed somehow I assume. So please explain the theory to me that drops of pop somehow impede this process. I have also been questioned and had bags refused that have fast food or restaurant containers "contaminated" by food waste and/or ketchup, mustard, etc. Then when I put these in normal household waste clear garbage bags, I am also told that is not allowed. Do the powers that be really think that I am going to spend my time washing these containers like they are dishes just to be clean so that they can be put in a container ship and sent to the Philippines and dumped in the ocean.
Now when the summer hits, and families are at there cottages for a week and going to the dump is an afterthought, where do you think there recycle bags that are refused by the ever-diligent dump personal? Do you really think that they will take them home to Toronto, Ottawa, or wherever they're from to dispose of there after carefully rinsing every pop can and washing all the food containers. They will be tossed on the side of the road somewhere along the way. Hopefully outside of Frontenac County, otherwise another high priced "public servant" in his county vehicle will be dispatched to pick up the garbage along the highways and ditches of "cottage country". Locals will no doubt resort to burning everything burnable, thus contributing to Greenhouse gases which we are trying to avoid are we not?
Oh, I get that "directives are directives" but as we know sometimes common sense (which has been disappearing in the new world) has to be applied.
