Loughborough PS Looming Their Way To The Record Books

A group of students at Loughborough Public School have woven friendships and school spirit this winter by putting together the longest rainbow loom in Canada. Making the loom consists of passing colourful elastics from index finger to middle finger in different patterns, while adding more elastics creating a rope. Individual lengths can then be linked together, forming an ever-longer chain.
"My sister gave me a really long rainbow loom and I brought it to school one day," said one of the clubs founding members, Finn Carmicheal. Teacher Miss Sinclair noticed how long it was and after some research discovered that a record had been set in Canada last year at 337 metres in length. Wanting to beat the record friends Finn Carmicheal, Wyatt Young, Lucas Ponte, Ryan Grant, Charlie Brunet, Carter Bowes, and Audrey Lewis, with the help of Miss Sinclair, formed the Rainbow Loom Club. Word of the challenge got out, and the group quickly amassed over 90 members, with participants from every grade. Younger students were struggling to hold the elastics on their fingers so they made makeshift loom holders from two pencils with an eraser taped between.
"It was great to see kids from every grade working together"
Between November and February, they wove together what measured out to be nearly half a kilometre of rainbow loom, so long, that to make things easier, they decided to use the school soccer field as their measuring stick, unspooling the colourful woven chain in increments from one end to the other.
Although Miss Sinclair felt that spring would be a better time to take the measurement on account of the two + feet of snow and frigid temperatures, the team of loomers couldn’t wait. On February 11th, the club, along with two witnesses, braved the weather and took the final measurement while stomping through the deep snow: 440 metres, more than 100 metres longer than the previous Canadian record set in 2025 at an elementary school in Beamsville, Ontario.
While they wait to hear from Guinness, they are taking a break from the club; however, their sights are now set on the world record... 13 kilometres!
