Ham Radio Connects Flinton to the World

Flinton resident and amateur radio operator Denis Rule took part in the annual Amateur Radio Field Day this past weekend, setting up a temporary emergency preparedness radio station at the Flinton Recreation Centre near the garden.

Field Day, held each year on the last weekend of June, is the largest amateur radio operating event in North America. The annual exercise challenges licensed operators to establish temporary stations powered by batteries or generators, simulating emergency conditions while making radio contacts with as many stations as possible over a 24-hour period. It also provides an opportunity to demonstrate how amateur radio can provide reliable communications when conventional systems are unavailable.

Rule welcomed members of the public throughout the afternoon, sharing information about amateur radio, emergency communications, and the important role licensed operators can play during disasters and community events.

Following the event, Rule thanked everyone who stopped by to learn more and support the demonstration.

"I'm happy to report that we made a total of 49 voice contacts with stations in 28 U.S. states, three Canadian provinces, as well as France, Bulgaria, and Argentina, all operating similar temporary emergency-style stations," he said.

The successful event highlighted both the global reach of amateur radio and the value of maintaining communication skills that can be called upon when communities need them most
