Five Simple Ways to Be a Better Waterfront Neighbour This Summer

Editors Note - after receiving the letter from Chrissie Robinson early this week, we came across the following in the annual newsletter from the Sharbot Lake Property Owners Association, and thought it would be helpful to run it, as we are now at the height of summer cottage season)

Summer is one of the best times of year to enjoy waterfront living. Whether you're boating, swimming, gardening, or simply relaxing by the water, small actions can make a big difference in protecting the lake and maintaining a positive community for everyone. Here are five simple ways to be a better waterfront neighbour this summer.

1. Keep the Water Clean

Everything that runs off your property can eventually find its way into the lake. Avoid using excess fertilizers and pesticides, maintain your septic system, and dispose of waste properly. Healthy shorelines and clean water benefit everyone who enjoys the lake.

2. Respect the Shoreline

Natural shoreline vegetation helps prevent erosion, filters runoff, and provides habitat for fish and wildlife. Consider preserving or restoring native plants along the water's edge rather than expanding lawns right to the shoreline.

3. Be Mindful of Noise

Summer activities are part of waterfront life, but sound travels surprisingly well across water. Keeping music and other noise at reasonable levels, especially early in the morning or late at night, helps everyone enjoy their time at the lake.

4. Reduce Unnecessary Outdoor Lighting

Bright lights shining across the water can affect wildlife, interfere with neighbours' enjoyment of the night sky, and create unwanted glare. Use fully shielded fixtures, aim lights downward, and consider motion sensors or timers. Warm-coloured lighting is often more comfortable and less disruptive than bright white lights; warm coloured lighting is less likely to attract mosquitoes.

5. Practice Safe and Courteous Boating

Observe speed limits, be aware of your wake near shorelines and docks, and give swimmers, paddlers, and anglers plenty of space. Responsible boating helps reduce erosion, improves safety, and contributes to a more enjoyable experience for everyone on the water.

Working Together

One of the greatest strengths of a waterfront community is the shared commitment to protecting the lake and surrounding environment. By making a few thoughtful choices, each of us can help ensure that our waterfront remains a beautiful, healthy, and enjoyable place for generations to come.
