The Sharbot Lake Lions

The Sharbot Lake Lions wrapped up our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on June 10. Highlights of the evening included the induction of our newest members, Marsha and Paul Byron, the installation of officers, achievement pin presentations, and the presentation of the Lion of the Year Award.

This year's recipient, which came as no surprise to many, was Joyce Bigelow. Joyce serves as our Treasurer and is a familiar face at Lions events. Many of you may know her as the "toast lady" at our monthly breakfasts. What you may not know is that Joyce, along with her daughter, Lynette Whan, scripted, directed, and performed in our Mystery Dinner Theatre last November. She also organized the dinner for that event and makes countless other contributions throughout the year. Joyce truly exemplifies the five pillars of Lionism. Congratulations, Joyce, on this well-deserved recognition.

Other notable moments from the AGM included the presentation of Years of Service pins. Dave Hansen received top honours, with 2026 marking an incredible 60 years of dedicated service as a Lion. Charlie Atwood followed with 27 years of service, while Bill Pyle and Ron Hollywood each celebrated 22 years of living by the Lions' motto, "We Serve."

The Canada Day celebration at Sharbot Lake Beach was a true testament to the spirit of this community. The stifling heat, followed by a thunderstorm, didn't deter those attending the event. The music played on, and so did the festivities. The Lions used the occasion to sell our remaining 50/50 tickets and draw the winning name. Congratulations to Susan Wulf, who took home the prize of $1,070.00.

Thank you to everyone who purchased tickets. Your generosity helps us help others. If Lady Luck passed you by this time, perhaps she'll shine on you during our next 50/50 draw, which is being planned for New Year's Day 2027. Be sure to check our Facebook page for this and all of our upcoming events and updates.

If you missed our rain barrel fundraiser, don't despair. At last count, we still have four barrels available for purchase. Each barrel comes complete with a top screen and spigot. To purchase one, call or text Steve at 416-523-5936.

Looking ahead, our famous monthly breakfast will be held on August 29 at Soldiers Memorial Hall, 1107 Garrett Street, Sharbot Lake, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. This breakfast will support Canadian Wildfire Relief and will feature fluffy pancakes, BBQ sausage, beans, scrambled eggs, toast, coffee, tea, and juice.

Come for the food, stay for the conversation, and leave knowing you've supported a great cause. (And possibly loosened your belt a notch. We won't judge!)

As always, guests who bring their own plate and utensils will be entered into a draw for a free future breakfast. Be sure to mark your calendars for our August 29 breakfast.

Following Canada Day, our attention turns to the Parham Fair, taking place August 14 and 15. This outstanding community event is celebrating its 134th year. For a full schedule of events, visit https://parham-fair.ca. The fair is still seeking vendors and volunteers. If you are interested, please contact them at [email protected]. The Lions, of course, will be there lending a hand and supporting another great community tradition.

As mentioned in a previous article, the Sharbot Lake Lions Club is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. To mark this milestone, we will be hosting a 75th Anniversary Community Celebration and Seniors Event at Oso Hall on October 17. More details will be announced in the coming months, so be sure to check our Facebook page regularly for updates and event information.

The Sharbot Lake Lions are always happy to assist local not-for-profit organizations whenever possible
