Candidates Slowly Drifting Into Election Race
(Editors Note - After the Frontenac News went to print this week, long servng incumbant councillor Helen Yanch registered for Ward 2 (Kaladar) in Addington Highlands, and there are now candidates for every available position in that township.)
With just over two weeks to go before the end of the nomination period, Addington Highlands and North Frontenac are both still short of a full slate of candidates, but a few more have come out of the woodwork.
In Addington Highlands, Roger Holden is now running in the southern ward, Ward 2 (Kaladar). He is the only candidate registered for one of those two council positions. Maurice (Moe) Leveille, an incumbent in Ward 1 Denbigh, is the second candidate registered for one of those two spots on council, along with Royce Rosenblath. Kirby Thompson is the only candidate for Reeve, at this time.
In North Frontenac, Councillor Fred Fowler is running for re-election in Ward 3 (Palmerston-Canonto). Fowler is the second candidate for one of the two council positions for his ward, along with Katie Surra. Roy Huetl is still the only candidate in Ward 2 (Clarendon Miller), and Mike Hage is the only candidate in Ward 1 (Barrie). There are two candidates for mayor, ensuring at least one election in the township, incumbent Gerry Lichty, and challenger Kelly Willis.
The most recent candidate to register in Central Frontenac was Edward Quinn, in Ward 2 (Olden) on July 27. With his candidacy, there will be an election contest in all four Central Frontenac wards, and for mayor.
In South Frontenac, no new candidates have entered the race since July 7, when Gord Boulton ensured there will be a contest in Storrington District, as incumbents Ron Sleeth and Norm Roberts are running for re-election. There will be an election for mayor in South Frontenac. Steven Leonard, former councillor Alan Revill are seeking the job, and incumbent Ron Vandewal is running for a fourth term.
The deadline for candidates to submit their nomination papers for certification is Friday, August 21st, at 2pm. Candidates for mayor/reeve must submit $200 and candidates for council $100. All candidates must also submit an endorsement form with 25 signatures from eligible voters in the municipality where they are running, and the candidate must be an eligible voter in the municipality where they are seeking office.
