Nomination Deadline Passes - Late Change In Addington Highlands Results in Ken Hook Acclamation As Reeve
(This article has been updated from the print version and is current as of Thursday, August 20, at 11:30mm. It will be periodically updated until the nomination deadline on Friday afternoon. The details of election coverage in the Frontenac News will be outlined in next week’s edition)
All candidates for municipal office in Ontario must submit their nomination fee and 25 signatures of electors in the municipality where they are running for office by 2pm this Friday (tomorrow for those reading this on publication day) and after that the contest will be set for the election which takes place officially on Monday, October 26, but voting takes place for the ten days preceding that date, through the magic of online and telephone voting.
After a bit of flurry of registrations in early August and into last week, there have been two changes since last week.
A lot can change at the last minute, however. Candidates can change the office or the district where they are running right up until the deadline, so there is sometimes a strategic reason to wait until the last day, or even the last hour, before submitting paperwork.
As of this writing, however, on Tuesday, August 18, the only elections that are slated to take place in South Frontenac, are the three-way race for Mayor with candidates Alan Revill, Ron Vandewal, and Steven Leonard, and a three-way race for two positions in Storrington District, with Norm Roberts, Ron Sleeth and Gord Boulton running.
In the other three South Frontenac Districts, only the incumbents are running for re-elections. Unless someone else comes forward, Randy Ruttan and Scott Trueman will be returned in Loughborough District, Ray Leonard and Doug Morey will brer turned in Portland, and Steve Pegrum and Adam Trurcotte will be returned in Bedford District.
In Central Frontenac, there are elections slated for Mayor. With Nicki Gowdy and Susan Irwin running to replace France Smith, who is not running. There are three or more candidates for the two council positions in all four wards, inclusing one new candidate this week in Ward 3 (Oso) - Jessica Singer, making it a four way race that includes Meredith Peters, Bill MacDonald, and Lesley Merrigan (more about that race next week)
In North Frontenac, there is a race for Mayor between three candidates; Gerry Lichty, Kelly Willis, and Art Hannigan, and as of Wednesday, there are three candidates running for the two council positions in Ward 1 (Barrie): Mike Hage, Cyndy Bonello, and the latest addition, Wayne Good, who just registered for the race. In ward 2, Roy Huetl and Rob Lesparance have been joined by Waune Manion to make it a contested election as well. There are only two candidates in ward 3, Katie Suirra and Fred Fowler.
In Addington Highlands, Kirby Thompson and Ken Hook are contesting for the position of Reeve, and there are two candidates for the two ward 1 (Denbigh) spots, Royce Rosenblath and Maurice Leveille. And similarly, two candidates in Ward 2 (Kaladar), Rodger Holden and Helen Yanch.
The municipal election also includes school board representatives. At this time, there is one candidate for the Limestone District School Board rep for Central and North Frontenac, Karen McGregor. As yet, there is no candidate for the Limestone District School Board Rep for South Frontenac. Louise Dorsett is the only candidate for the French Separate School Board in the region, and Pascal Dussault is the only candidate for the Algonquin and Lakeshore District School Board. ■
