Two 40th Anniversaries, Peter Bell
Two 40th Anniversaries
I was pleased to see you give recognition to the Communications Group who started meeting 40 years ago (40 years later, communications are as important as ever, Frontenac News, Feb 24/11). That group of five had remarkable insight to recognize that a means of communication was essential to developing a strong community identity and that in turn was the key to community development. Congratulations on the great job you and your staff are doing to continue the standards and traditions of a great community newspaper that makes us proud. All of the community shares in your celebration and feels a sense of ownership of the Frontenac News.
This year is also the 40th anniversary of the Sharbot Lake Medical Centre. On June 30, 1971 we were setting up a 60-foot-long used house trailer at the back of the hotel parking lot to serve as our first office, with plans for a July 1 opening. While we were scrubbing out the trailer, a 65-year-old man rode up on his bike and asked, in a distinctly country drawl, ”Is the Doc in?” So, the medical centre was officially opened on June 30, 1971.
Does anybody out there have a photo of the trailer or of George McCoy on his bike?
Congratulations and best wishes from the Sharbot Lake Family Health Team!
Dr. Peter Bell
