Thank You

On May 18 an unfortunate accident happened. Our much loved cat got hit on the road, but we wouldn’t have known if a kind lady in a red Revell’s car hadn’t stopped and got our neighbour, who recognized the cat and informed us that this had happened. Our family would like to thank this lady for notifying us about this incident. We will dearly miss our beloved cat Mittens.

Re: Resort Owner Reeling

I can’t believe what Border Services has done to Kevin Philips and Fernleigh Lodge turning away customers coming not only to fish in the Frontenacs but also to film their experiences for American television. And this all the name of preserving Canadian jobs? The presumption I suppose is that Mr. Philips should hire a Canadian film crew (preferably unionized) to film his lodge and somehow beg or pay to have this aired in the U.S. Well Mr. Philips is out $15,000 and so is unlikely to hire anyone. He is also out countless dollars of potential revenue had the segment been filmed and aired.

In these days of 911 and mortgage derivatives it is hard enough running a tourism business without also having to deal with bungling bureaucrats and politicians more concerned with ‘preserving’ jobs than in nurturing the very businesses that create those jobs; politicians miserly counting each minimum wage part-time job as if it were some great victory. It is time politicians start focusing on protecting what’s really important, those individuals such as Mr. Philips willing to risk money, effort and livelihood to bring wealth and employment to a community.

And if, as I suspect, this was simply a mistake by one border guard, then perhaps the $15,000 should be docked from his or her pay. It is about time the servants of the public took responsibility for the losses they subject on all of us.

Re: Chickens in South Frontenac

In observing this situation being handled by South Frontenac council (SF Council, Frontenac News, May 5/11), everyone should be pleased that dialogue is occurring, in stark contrast to how North Frontenac handled such a situation by delivering a threatening letter, 22/08/2008 signed by Ken Gilpin, informing the two individuals guilty of such a heinous crime, under the By Law No. 15-04 of maximum fines of $25000. and a $10000. per day for non-compliance. It would do the people good to investigate and see who the airheads are, that wrote such a law, imposing such a stupid penalty. Perhaps there is a link from the originators to the people in Queen's Park that I see clearly as fascists.
