What a Show, Jen Robertson

Randy Hillier’s mailout, David Daski

Re: Motocross track, Adrian O'Connell

What a Show

Darkness fell and the night was a blaze of colored stars at the Ompah Gravel Pit on July 2. The North Frontenac Firefighters Association was responsible for all this magic. After taking courses by The Natural Resources Canada in the Fireworks Operators Course, they certainly were more than qualified to handle this event, and we hope for many more. All the firefighters’ work, patience and care in setting up these fireworks to make sure no delays would happen enabled everything to start on time, and all fireworks went off in the correct sequence. Such dedication for the people in this community is far beyond their many duties. We are proud of you all! Attendance exceeded expectations and made us feel proud to be a Canadian. The people who donated sure helped to make it a great success.

Randy Hillier’s mailout

Having received MPP Randy Hiller's mailout this morning, I am prompted to ask Mr. Hillier; who authorised him to use the official coat of arms of the Province of Ontario on his letterhead for partisan political purposes?

Re: Motocross track

Well, actually it’s a two year “one year” proposal......and hold onto your hat!

Initially on June 14, Mr. McGuire asked for 5 races/year on Saturdays (campers out by noon on Sundays) and practices on Wednesdays of race weeks only. He quickly assured us he was ready to negotiate with the 51 complainants who have issues with noise, dust and the influx of hundreds of strangers into our community.

Council leaned towards allowing 2 (maybe 3) races for a trial year with practices on Wednesday of rack week. While this may benefit some of our young people, hundreds of those who will race will not be from our community.

Mr. Day’s “new” proposal presented to Council June 28 has gone up to 4 races over the next two calendar years (from 8 a.m. to evening, both Saturday and Sunday), with practices any day of the week for Mr. Day’s “friends” (who could be an unlimited number of people from the motocross community). Funny but I thought negotiation meant working downwards from an initial position.

How will Council know if cash changes hands for non-race day usage? How will council prevent camping on other nights of the week for “friendly” practices? What constraints has Council imposed (that actually can be enforced)?

Are the fine people of Sydenham and Harrowsmith really all happy to give up the safety, serenity and property values in their community for the benefit of so many non-residents?
