The Central Frontenac Railway Heritage Society has purchased a caboose from CN for $5,000.
While they are pleased to have an artefact that will become the focal point for their collection, they have one small, or rather, big, problem. How do you move a caboose from Vankleek Hill, where the caboose is located, to a new home? The caboose has a damaged under carriage, and for that reason it cannot travel by rail, so it will have to be transported on the roads.
“We have a company from Kingston lined up to do the moving, but the caboose is too tall and a cupola on the top needs to be cut and re-attached once it arrives,” said Sally Angle, the chairperson of the Railway Heritage Society.
All told, getting the caboose in place and in one piece will cost about $15,000, and the Heritage Society is mounting a fundraising campaign to cover the cost. Flyers are being sent out to supporters and will also be posted at public locations, and fundraising events are being planned for later this spring.
