Over the next couple of weeks, three choirs will be holding spring concerts in the region, two at Trinity United Church in Verona, and one at the Maberly Hall.
Tay Valley Choir
First up is The Tay Valley Community Choir. The choir has a reputation for concerts that create a comfortable, community atmosphere. Audiences return again and again to experience that warm feeling and the joy of singing that fills the Maberly Hall.
This year’s spring concert, ‘A Journey Through Song’ promises to be no exception. It will be a voyage through many old and new favourites, such as The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Blue Moon, Here Comes the Sun, Bridge over Troubled Water, Moon River etc.
Under the direction of Rebecca Worden and accompanist Mary Lou Carroll, during this winter/spring session they worked hard to renew the lovely four-part harmonies of some of their favourites and to learn several new songs. As an added bonus The Tenor Bass sections have prepared their own selection ‘On the Road Again’, and the Soprano Altos will sing ‘Scarborough Fair’. As is usual at a Tay Valley Choir concert, there will be opportunities for the audience to sing along (words provided).
Join the Tay Valley Choir for ‘A Journey Though Song’ at the Maberly Hall on Friday, April 26 at 7pm. Admission is by donation. Food Bank donations are welcome. Refreshments will follow the concert.
Frontenac Youth Choir
The second concert is the spring concert of the Frontenac Youth Choir, which will be held on Sunday, April 28 at 2:30pm in Trinity United Church. Admission with a non-perishable food item. The Frontenac choir will be joined by special guests: the Odessa Childrens' Choir.
Frontenac Women’s Chorus
And the following weekend, come celebrate life and love with the Frontenac Women's Chorus as they present their Spring Concert on Saturday, May 4 at 7 PM at Trinity United Church in Verona. Highlights of the evening will include special guest, flautist Anne Palmer.
Anne plays both flute and piccolo with the Kingston Symphony orchestra, has been teaching flute from her home for 25 years, and taught through the Limestone District School Board for a number of years. In 2001, she founded Flutissimo, a flute choir based in Kingston, and she remains its director.
The concert will also feature the world premiere of a composition by choir director, Stella ter Hart. My Child.
Stella described how My Child came about.
“Before the pandemic, Christine, daughter of our much-loved accompanist, Kate Van Allen, asked me if I would consider writing a choir piece that highlighted flute and piano in addition to the choir. Christine soon after become a mother, making Kate a grandmother with a new granddaughter, Clara.
“As I reflected on this new little person, I was reminded of my own grandmothers, whom I never met. How fleeting and yet how eternal is life; like the wind and the sun. Our children are our souls and through them, love lives forever.”
You won't want to miss this highly entertaining and fun musical evening! Music selections will range from the 1500’s all the way to music written in our time. Classical, folk, modern - even Rock’n Roll - this is a concert everyone will love.
Admission by free will donation, plus an item for the food bank. The main doors at the front of the church are fully accessible. There is parking at the rear of the church and on the street. Refreshments served after the concert in Trinity Church Hall. All are welcome.
