Can I take a moment... I want to talk to you about a result of the trade war... I know you haven't heard enough! This however is a different take on the attack on Canada.
I want to talk to you about our flag, I know … Been done! Hear me out. Flags evolved gradually over centuries, dating back to ancient Greeks.
Starting as military banners for identification and communication, then becoming symbols of nations, groups and organizations.
Their use expanded across various cultures and purposes. In the middle-ages flags became symbols of countries, Kings, organizations, cities and guilds, with de signs often derived from badges worn by soldiers. The current national flag of Canada featuring the maple leaf was made official in 1965. This flag is typically flown during daylight hours, but can be flown at night as well. It must be flown for Canada Day and on Victoria Day.
The flag is flown at half mast to express mourning, following specific protocols outlined by the Government of Canada. People choose to fly flags, including national flags all the time, to express patriotism, national pride! It can be to vis ibly demonstrate their love for their country and their sense of national identity. When the flag becomes faded or torn it should be taken down out of respect and replaced! Like removing your hat for the singing of the national anthem, church and funerals.
I have enough information (I think) to make my point. The Canadian flag has appeared on T-shirts, hats and signs (like the one on the fence of Yourway Home Hardware Canada Not For Sale !!!!!) and the beautiful We Are Canadian round emblem! (On the front page of Frontenac News, March13). Why? National pride, patriotism and simply love for Canada! Canada is known for a peaceful, easy-going character. Never have I seen Canadians respond with so many strong feelings about their country.
Checking items in the store for Canadian made items on the shelves. People have no problem speaking out about how they feel about Trump's crazy behavior, threats and lies insulting Canada! Retaliating with our own tariffs is met with patriotic approval!
Yet, wait for it ... I don't see many flags! What a great feeling to put that flag on my house, making a statement! When I was growing up we were poor and never had a flag, But the people on our street flew their flags! What a happy feeling, like a birthday party with balloons! I am going to challenge you to fly your flag - making a statement of pride and love!!! It's time for my confession ... This May I will have been be in Canada for 56 years! I am Dutch and my saying is, "I do not live in the Netherlands anymore, but the Netherlands will always live in me".
I came as a protesting teenager, and have since become a Canadian citizen. But, I have never been more proud and in love with Canada than I am now! Thanks Trump lol.
