The Denbigh outdoor rink was resurfaced on Saturday September 28, 2024, at no cost to the Township.
The outdoor rink in Denbigh is an important recreational facility for residents and visitors in the northern part of Addington Highlands. As with any facility, as it ages it requires maintenance. Over the last 10 years, the Township along with volunteer support has replaced many sidewall sections and painted the rink boards a number of times to keep them in acceptable condition. One more challenging issue is that the rink base is no longer level and for a number of years has posed difficulties in making and retaining ice.
Two local residents Peter Mieske & Bev Tucker, both involved in the road construction industry, took the lead in contacting a number of major companies looking for their help in resurfacing the rink. This effort eventually led to a number of regional contractors and suppliers working together to provide a new paved rink surface at no cost to the Township. The work started with the Township Roads Dept removing the old paved surface and installing a level crushed gravel base, with gravel donated by the local quarry KCK Aggregates.
The rest of it all came together on Saturday September 28, 2024. Leveque Brothers in Bancroft donated the hot mix asphalt, Bonnechere Excavating in Renfrew donated the trucking, GOA Paving of Denbigh donated the paving equipment and all the crew, and Keller Firewood donated a loader to shuttle asphalt to the paver. The Denbigh Recreation Committee and some of their local businesses provided a variety of support activities for the day, helping out, serving food and drinks to the numerous workers and volunteers, and cleaning up at the end of the day. The event was amazing, particularly seeing all the various companies and volunteers working seamlessly together for a common goal. Our community is so fortunate to have generous, thoughtful and caring regional companies and volunteers who contribute to our local community. The new rink base looks absolutely fantastic!
