Arden
by Brent Fehr

Did you notice any shiny material while mucking in your garden this year? Ya, Me as well ... Did You Know - In the 1930s, gold was struck, bringing prospectors from all over Canada to the Arden area, including at least 50 engineers from all the big Canadian mining concerns. Farmland was quickly bought up by large mining companies and individual prospectors alike. Most town residents had a claim staked out, hoping to sell out at fabulous prices. This gold rush was relatively short-lived, and today many of the buildings erected to house the miners and their families are gone or abandoned.

For beginner gardeners and those with more experience, come and share ideas, ask questions and learn more about how to cultivate a beautiful, productive & successful garden. Harrowsmith

They're gone!!! The Harrowsmith Beautification Committee would like to report that two of the eight planters placed along Hwy 38 in the village are missing. They were there on Wednesday night, June 12 and when one of our members went for a run at 6am on Thursday, June 13, they were gone. The planters were located across the road from each other on the corner of Hwy 38 and Church Street. A report has been made to the OPP. These planters are 28 inches high, filled with rocks, dirt and flowers. It would probably take two people to carry them and a truck to transport them. If you saw someone unloading a couple of planters on Thursday morning, June 13, or a couple of new planters have appeared on your street or Road, call the OPP at 888-310-1122.

Henderson
Jean Brown

Henderson United pulled out all the stops in their finally final yard sale with thanks to all the volunteers and our leader the Rev. Kaitlyn Ostrander. We are truly amazed at how little bits of donated items become “much” with the help of a Holy Other. The church next plans a big fundraising breakfast “wing ding” on Sat. Aug.3- so please set the date aside.

Our neighbours at Land O’Lakes Emmanuel United Church in Northbrook held a “satellite service” of worship enjoying the ministry of the Rev. Mike Putnam of Selby United Church broadcasting on live stream from Selby to Northbrook. Being a satellite church is the new and up-coming way to be a church.

We were truly saddened by the death of our great friend and reporter Pearl Killingbeck at Moira Place in Tweed where she received fantastic care. We loved Pearl’s columns and news, and have many fond memories - particularly of her hilarious anecdotes written for the news during Covid. I also recall one rocking time when we (myself, Olive, Pearl, Harriett) got all shook up at an Elvis concert at Sharbot Lake Retirement Residence. “Elvis” (a.k.a Stephen Goodberry)even visited Pearl at her home, and sang songs to her over the phone, bringing great joy. Once again, another second mom has gone on and we thank Pam and all the family for sharing Pearl with us motherless/childless ones.

Ompah
by Leane Bailey

We send our condolences to the families of Olive Violet (nee Lusk) Allen, Betty Crabtree, and Pearl Killingbeck who all passed this month. These three ladies were well loved and very active in the community. They will be missed.

We now have a community fridge in the foyer of the Ompah Community Centre. In the fridge will be food from the store in original packaging, or extra produce from your garden (must be washed, dried and bagged).  Help yourself or leave extras.

At the June Birthday Bash/Potluck we celebrated Tim’s birthday. A good time was had by all, and Marily challenged us with trivia questions about canadian weather and geography. The next birthday bash/potluck is on July 17th.

The Emily Jean Flack Concert at Snow Road Community Centre last Thursday, was wonderful. Marily commented that Emily has a beautiful voice and writes lovely melodies and lyrics, and step dances too. Her accompanying guitar player was amazing.

There were six tables of clothing on offer at the Ompah community clothing swap last Saturday. There was much trying on of clothes and lots of laughter. Everyone gave away things from their tables but also went home with many other treasures. It was so much fun that it was decided to do it again in the fall.

St. Kilian’s Church in Ardoch will be hosting a yard and bake sale on Saturday, June 29th from 10am to 1pm. You’ll be sure to find a treasure or two, as well as something sweet for your Canada Day celebrations!

A strawberry social will be held on Saturday, June 29th at the Snow Road Community Centre, from 6pm to 9pm. Treat yourself to fresh strawberries, cake, ice cream and a beverage. The cost is $7 per person, and an additional $3.50 if you can’t resist a second helping.

On Monday, July 1 there will be a Canada Day family picnic at the Ompah Community Centre. Bring a blanket and your lunch. There will be chips and drinks available. Music will be playing so feel free to sing or dance along. There will also be games for children and adults. The picnic starts at noon and goes to 2:30pm. Come out to celebrate Canada Day!

On Saturday, July 13th, come out and meet the artists (Leane and Brian Bailey – Art By The Baileys), from 1pm to 3pm, at the Ompah Community Centre. They will be doing demonstrations of their artwork in progress and will have a display of their artwork. You can enter to win a free pastel painting called “Winter Gallop” at the event too.

Please join us on Wednesday for coffee and treats starting at 10am. It’s a great way to meet your Ompah neighbours and friends. While you are there drop by the library which is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am to noon.

Sydenham
by Karen Brawley

Slither our rock snake is back … located along the trail beside Foodland … join us in moving him back to his summer home on Thursday June 27th at 530 pm.  Please bring some new additions to him.  We want to see if we can make him reach all the way to Clearwater up the trail where Rietta Wadman-Mills lived.  She is greatly missed in our community and by her students, so a tribute to her in form of art seems so suitable.   if you’re adding to our pal Slither please remember along edge of trail so as not to interfere with our many walkers and cyclists.  We can share

Canada day weekend, is upon us ...  as is the food truck fundraiser.   Syd’s Snack Shack and Trousdale’s Foodland have joined forces for a fundraiser event for the amazing folks at New Leaf Link.   Saturday June 29th from 10:30 am until 2:00 pm, there will be hot dogs, sausages and French fries for sale with proceeds going to New Leaf Link.   So if you’re thinking of lunch, be sure to join in  on this amazing event.  Even have your face painted by Not So Amateurs Amateurs.  Hot diggity dog.  Won’t wanna miss this

Wishing our amazing country Canada a very happy birthday. Sydenham is a pretty awesome place to be proud of your Canadian roots in.  See page 6-7 for details on events at the Point and fireworks at Gerald Ball Park, and the shuttle bus service.

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 496 is going to be open on Canada day as well.   Starting at noon bbq hamburgers at hot dogs will be available. Air conditioned and karaoke entertainment from 1-5 pm.  Canada colours highly encouraged.
