Battersea/Storrington
by Chris Pantrey

When is the only time you go on red and stop on green? When you are eating watermelon!

WOW! Battersea is a busy place to be this Saturday!

From 11-3, the Frontenac Society of Model Engineers is offering free train rides at their track at Battersea Ball Park.  For both the young and young at heart, ride the rails through the field and woods! While this is free to all, donations will be accepted to help maintain this amazing venue. No other village can boast their very own railroad!

Then, head down to Gilmour Point from 1-3, and take in the music of Inverary's own Hoozhear? This is presented by South Frontenac Township as part of their summer Music in the Park series.  Again, free to all! Grab your lawn chair and enjoy some tunes on the beach.

Finally, end your day at Battersea United Church,  for their annual fish fry! From 5-7, enjoy fish, potato salad, coleslaw,  baked beans, dinner roll and homemade pies! Mmmmm! For only $20 per person, (children $10) don't even think about cooking Saturday!

Maberly-Bolingbroke
Karen Prytula

Last week we had heavy rains due to the remnants of hurricane Beryl. Almost 122 years ago to the day (July 7, 1902), a terrific storm passed over Maberly doing considerable damage. Christopher Briggs lost six of his best cows to lightning, and had a very narrow escape himself. The rainfall was very plentiful in this vicinity. Despite the cold weather the hay and grain looked well. Notwithstanding the disagreeable weather the social at Wemyss under the auspices of the Guild of St. Stephen’s Church was largely attended.

More happenings in Maberly from July 1902 – “The ball held here in the Town Hall last evening was a grand success. Every person went home satisfied with the enjoyment of the evening and wondering when the next one will be. Thomas Greer and William Patterson have returned from Glenfield, New York. William McPhail our school teacher has gone home for vacation and does not plan on returning. Mr. Moore and Mr. Ure invented a ‘knotter’, hoping they will soon get it patented. [It was probably used in the textile mill that no longer exists.] [Source: Perth Courier, July 11, 1902]

What a great turnout for the Under the Big Top  Vendor Event held at the Sharbot Lake Rink on Saturday supporting the 14 vendors.  What a beautiful day to be out supporting local!  It was great talking to everyone about how nice it was to see the rink being used for other events... There is definitely lots of potential events that this would be great for! There has been a lot of work and money put into this project so it would be nice if those using it would remember to pick up their trash and dispose of it properly!  There are trash bins close by that you can always put your candy wrappers, cans and yes, even dirty diapers in.  This is a public property and we need to all do our part in keeping it clean of trash.

Sharbot Lake
by Greg Rodgers

Tonight (July 18) Sharbot Lake - Frontenac Folk Club, 7:30pm. Belong Sharbot Lake, 1004 Medical Centre Road. Join us for the 2nd instalment of the Frontenac Folk Club, presented by Port William Sound & Belong, featuring performances by Le Ren and Farser.

Who is passing through Sharbot Lake?

Ever wonder who’s staying in Sharbot Lake during the high season? (besides cottagers and cottage renters).  We have been counting down the top 5 interest groups who regularly stay here for 1-2 nights.  We have revealed already the 5th and 4th most popular short term visitors; ATVers and “Camping grandparents” (and summer camp parents)

This week, #3 - Cyclists

“Bikepacking” is currently the biggest trend in cycling, and our region is popular to hardcore “bikepackers.” They are often young urban professionals who are on week-long cycling adventures of 100+ kilometers/day (mostly traveling the Trans Canada Trail).  They often camp as they travel with occasional stops at cozy B&B's.  There are also a significant number of overnight senior cyclists who travel from Kingston (who love the refurbished section of the K&P Trail).

Sydenham
by Karen Brawley

Remember the Peanut Butter challenge? And, of course how Harrowsmith managed to be deemed nuttier than Sydenham? An update: Our peanut butter donation at Christmas time has been put to amazing use at the Food Bank, and stock is low already. Goes to show how much of a essential item it proved to be. So way to go everyone.

My goodness we’ve sure had a humid summer so far. Mother Nature certainly is full of hot flashes. Thank you to all those who work out doors to keep our community running and provide us with all we need, even in the warmest of temperatures.

Save the date, Friday July 26 the Frontenac 4-H Clover Buds will be at Trousdale’s Foodland from 4-7 pm collecting donations for the Foodbank, let’s show the Clover Buds how we care and help them out with their food drive.

Having a bonfire this summer? What are some s’more must tries? I recently read bacon wrapped marshmallows before putting in fire. Could be interesting. On Canada day I was at a friend's party and maple cookies, whole new level s’more.
