Mosey on up to Henderson on Monday Aug. 5 when Henderson United hosts a pancake breakfast from 8:00- 11:00 AM at the hall with regular and gluten free pancakes on tap, along with toppings, coffee, tea, and real local maple syrup to boot. Who can bring the largest family grouping do you reckon? Also, we’ve got a super duper flush toilet - and are so thankful to our township who keep it maintained while the church pays the hydro, oil, insurance, toilet paper, and do the cleaning, booking for the Henderson Hall. It’s great to pull together for our community!! We’ve also got a secret honey house in the back 40 for emergencies- so it’s all systems go "for going!!"

Deepest sympathy to our own Ray Whitelock in the death of his son Gregory a week or so ago.

Our Pine Meadow People kicked off their Summer Olympics with a Ceremonial Parade complete with their own Olympic Mascot.

Harlowe boogied up a storm at their recent open mike with lots of singers and down home laughs. The band rocked and I had good visits with Roy, Dave and Mary Johnson, Ray Whitelock. Violet Sleeper, Lois Wilde, Doreen Cox. Betty and Jack McMurray of Tweed danced up a storm as did Marlene Bertrim . The brother and sister team of Terry and Janet- children of the late Charlie Good did us all proud with their hosting and cooking. It was a real hoot and a holler. We missed Marie for that week only.

Looking to the future the Arden Artisan event excitedly happens on Sat. Aug. 10 and Sun. Aug. 11 from 11:00 – 4:00 featuring Joanne Picket and Arlene Uens at Arden Pottery, Sarah Hale, Sylvia and Dave Parno at Arden Batik, and Judith Versavel. John DuChene, James Hanley and Aileen Merriam at Gallery on the Bay. Each studio offers a door prize opportunity, along with visiting, viewing, purchasing, commissioning. Get your Christmas shopping done or commission an item for graduation, anniversary, or whatever event is forthcoming. What an opportunity to see and purchase at various studios, while chin wagging and perusing.

Ompah
by Leane Bailey

There was a line-up at the door for the fire extinguisher check, and it was busy throughout the day.  Many folks were relieved to be told that they had workable extinguishers. About 20 new or refurbished fire extinguishers were sold to replace old unusable ones.  Thanks to Sandy for donating his time to ensure we have safety equipment that works should we need it.  Thanks also to the four firefighters who were in attendance to answer questions with a display of safety handouts, though they had to leave for a time to respond to a medical call.  Over $200 was raised for the Children's Christmas Party - a win win for our community. Thank you to Michelle for organizing this event.

We have many events planned for August; I have listed them below. Thank you to everyone who has offered to help plan and run all the events taking place at the Ompah Community Centre.

Barbara Sproule will be the honoured guest at a garden party at the Ompah Community Centre on August 17 from 2pm – 4pm.  This will celebrate the many, many years that she has served our community as teacher, reeve, county warden, and guide of the Township in protecting its bylaws.  You may have known her in many situations, even as a student.  Please mark this special event in your calendar. If you would like to help with this event, please contact Janice at 613-479-2318

The August Birthday Bash/Potluck will be on Wednesday, August, 21st. Bring a toonie, and a dish to share and join in a lovely meal as we celebrate the August birthdays.

The Ompah Community Centre Indoor/Outdoor Flea Market is on August 24th from 9am-1pm. Vendors needed. Clean out your basement and garage and bring to the Ompah Community Centre to sell, trade or donate and have some fun. Tables and chairs provided. Donations accepted. Proceeds to the Ompah Benevolent Fund. For information please contact Patti Bradbury 613-390-9516

A Celebration of Life for Pearl Killingbeck is planned for August 24th, from 10am to 2pm at the Snow Road Snowmobile Club. A luncheon will be provided by the Snow Road Community Centre and the Snow Road Snowmobile Club. Contact Rick, Sharon, or Pam for more information.

Mark your calendars so you can plan to attend Ompah Community Centre’s Music Night. It is on August 30th, from 7pm to 9pm. The event will feature local musicians and singers from the Ompah area and a few special guests. Stay tuned for more details. Donations accepted for the Community Centre. Contact Dominic Simone for more information at 647-286-2341

We now have a Community Fridge in the foyer of the Ompah Community Centre.  In the fridge will be food from the store in original packaging, or extra produce from your garden (must be washed, dried and bagged).  Help yourself or leave extras.

Please join us on Wednesday mornings for coffee and treats starting at 10am. It’s a great way to meet your Ompah neighbours and friends. While you are there drop by the library which is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am to noon.

Plevna
by Rhonda Watkins

It was a tough decision because there were so many impressive entries this week, but this has to be the fish of the week. Congratulations to Warren Nelson who pulled in and released a 31" - 9.75 pound walleye last Monday night on Big Gull Lake!! WOW! How exciting! Thank you to Warren and to everybody else that submitted pictures! It's wonderful to see so many people in the Community out having fun and catching fish!! I look forward to next week's pictures!

Janice Anderson, President of the North Frontenac Food Bank in Sharbot Lake, was pleased to accept a donation of $466 from the Clar-Mill Community Volunteers in Plevna. The funds were raised through the popular poker chip bingo lunches held at the Clar-Mill Community Hall. Just another example of how our communities are stronger together! The bingo lunches continue at the Hall alternating Tuesdays.

As the August long weekend fast approaches, so does the next Bake Sale and yard sale at St. Kilian’s Church in Ardoch on Saturday, August 3rd from 10am-1pm.. As always, there’ll be a large selection of homemade goodies and lots of treasures for you bargain hunters out there!

The annual fundraising yard sale for the Fernleigh School and Community Hall is also this weekend. August 3, 4 & 5, 9am- 3pm. 4971 Road 506 in Fernleigh. Rain or Shine, something for everyone. All money collected goes to Building and Property maintenance of this historical gem. This little school started educating small minds back in 1881, back then it was a small log cabin school house designated SS no.8 CT and as the story goes it burnt down in 1910 and the existing building was built in1911 to take it's place. It was decommissioned in 1962 with the opening of Clarendon Central Public School in Plevna.

This Sat Aug 3rd, you are also invited to the second annual delicious pancake breakfast at the Plevna Clar-Mill Hall (6598 Buckshot Lake Road) in support of the North Frontenac Amateur Astronomy Club. $10 per adult and $5 for kids 12 and under. Everyone welcome!

Sharbot Lake
by Greg Rodgers

This Week at the Sharbot Lake Farmer’s Market: The Sharbot Lake Farmers Market is kicking off the long weekend with a BBQ & Beer Garden at the Market this weekend. Shop the Market Saturday from 9-12noon and enjoy the BBQ & Beer Garden from 11-1 featuring food from our LOCAL farmers and beer from The Local Brewer and Kick & Push Brewery.

Who’s Coming to Sharbot Lake this Summer?: Over the past few weeks we have been counting down the top 5 interest groups who stay in Sharbot lake for 1-2 nights per stay in the high season. Recapping, we have indicated ATVers at number 5; camping grandparents at # 4, long distance bike packers at # 3; and “Highlands Wanderers" at #2.  This week we reveal the top group of short stay travellers: At #1 - International Travellers

Since 2017, we can verify that visitors from at least 37 countries have travelled through and stayed at least 1 night in Sharbot Lake, showing up as early as March and as late into the year as November. While the “Lion’s Share” of these are from Western Europe (the top 4 countries being France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands), we can also identify 19 European Countries in total, and travellers from countries of 6 continents, (including some unsuspecting places such as Luxembourg, Suriname, Bangladesh and Slovenia). They travel here because many want to make the trip from Montreal to Niagara; they generally prefer to travel highway # 7; they want a stop halfway between, on a lake, and for only one night.  Rock Hill B&B and The Sharbot Lake Country Inn are the only accommodators between Ottawa and Toronto that meet this criterion.

From Frontenac Community Services: Did you receive your GST or the Carbon Rebate? You need to file your 2023 income tax to receive these benefits.  Rural Frontenac Community Services has Community Volunteers, trained by CRA, who will e-file returns for you for free if you qualify for the program! Call us at 613-279-3151.
